미세먼지 노출은 어머니의 우울을 매개로양육행동에 영향을 미치는가? (Does maternal depression due to fine particulate matter affect parenting practices?)

초록

연구목적: 미세먼지로 인한 정신·신체건강의 위험성이 보고되고 있음에도 불구하고 미세먼지가 개인과 가족 내 행동에 어떠한 변화를 초래하는지 미세먼지의 이차적 영향력에 대해 분석한 연구는 드물다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 미세먼지 농도가 높은 지역에 거주할수록 어머니의 우울 수준이 증가하여 자녀 양육행동에 영향을 미치는지 분석하는 것이다.
방법: 한국아동패널의 10차년도 자료와 한국환경공단에서 구축한 대기오염정보관리시스템 에어코리아 자료를 결합하여 다수준 구조방정식모형을 통해 미세먼지가 어머니 우울을 증가시켜 처벌과 방관에 영향을 미치는지 분석하였다. 다수준 구조방정식모형을 이용한 분석방법은 지역 수준에서 측정한 미세먼지 농도와 개인 수준에서 측정한 어머니 우울과 양육행동을 동시에 고려하여 환경적 영향력을 검증할 수 있다는 데에 강점이 있다.
결과: 분석 결과, 미세먼지 농도가 높은 지역에 거주하는 경우 어머니의 우울이 증가하여부정적 양육행동인 처벌과 방관 수준이 증가하는 것으로 나타났다. 미세먼지는 양육행동에 직접적인 영향을 미치지는 않았으나, 어머니 우울의 완전 매개를 통해 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
결론: 이 결과를 통해 아동·가족복지적 측면에서 미세먼지 대응방안과 양육행동에 영향을 미치는 어머니의 우울에 대한 개입 방안에 대해 논의하였다. 미세먼지의 인체 위해성뿐 아니라 정신건강에의 위험성에 대해서도 인지시킬 필요가 있으며, 미세먼지의 이차적인 영향력을 줄이기 위해 어머니의 우울을 감소시키고 긍정적인 양육행동을 증진시킬 수있도록 다각적인 개입이 필요할 것이다.

영어초록

Objectives: Despite evidence of the harmful impact of fine particulate matter on both physicaland mental health outcomes, little is known about any secondary effects such as howit might negatively affect individual and family behavior. Therefore, this study aims to examinewhether exposure to fine particulate matter is associated with parenting practicesmediated by maternal depression.
Methods: This study uses mother data from the Panel Study on Korean Children and fineparticulate data from the Ministry of Environment’s Air Korea in 2017, and employs multi-level structural equation modeling(MLSEM). This approach has the capacity to addressa multi-level data structure, in this case fine particulate matter data measured at neighborhoodlevel and mother data measured at individual level, and examine contextual impacton individual outcomes.
Results: The findings suggest that higher exposure to fine particulate matter increases thelevel of maternal depression, which in turn increases negative parenting practices, such ascorporal punishment and ignoring misbehaviors. Although the direct effect of fine particulatematter on parenting practices was not statistically significant, exposure to fine particulatematter was indirectly associated with parenting practices through maternal depression.
Conclusions: This is the first study to empirically explore the effect of exposure to fineparticulate matter on parenting practice mediated by maternal depression. Implications includethe need to alleviate fine particulate matter as well as to provide interventions to reducematernal depression and, consequently, negative parenting practices. In addition,awareness of the negative impacts of fine particulate matter on mental health outcomesneeds to be promoted. Collective intervention in reducing maternal depression and promotingpositive parenting practices may also be needed to alleviate the secondary risks of fineparticulate matter.
