초록

초등사회과의 정착(定着)과 발전에는 다양한 요인들의 복합적 영향이 있지만, 무엇보다 그 과정에 참여하는 주체들의 역할이 중요하다. 초등사회과는 1960년대와 1970년대를 거치면서 변화를 요구받는데 그 과정에 한국 초등사회과 주체들의 헌신적인 노력이 있었다. 여러 주체들 중에서 이 시기 초등 사회과교육자, 초등사회과 편수관 은용기를 주목하였다. 은용기는 대내외적인 정치사회적, 교육적 요구를 수용하여 제3차 초등사회과 교육과정을 탄생시켰고, 그 과정에서 초등사회과의 통합적 성격을 유지하는데 기여하였다. 또한 새로운 교수학습의 방법으로 도입된 탐구의 과정을 수용하여 제3차 초등 사회교과서 내용구성체제를 변화시키는데 결정적으로 공헌하였다. 그는 이후에도 후학에게 초등 사회교과서 편찬 방법에 관해 지도하는 등 초등사회과에 많은 업적을 남긴다. 그의 이러한 노력으로 초등사회과는 자리를 잡아나갔으며 교실 현장에서 초등사회과의 성격을 구현하는 수업이 실현될 수 있도록 했다는 점에서 의미가 있다. 즉, 그의 삶은 초등사회과 교육사 그리고 교실 현장에서 하나의 의미로 음미되며 미래 초등사회과에 토대가 될 것이다.

영어초록

Various factors had complex effects on the settlement and development of elementary social studies, but what is more crucial than anything else in the process is the roles of the subjects participating in it. Elementary social studies were required to change during the 1960s and 1970s, and there were numerous dedicated efforts by leaders in Korean elementary social studies throughout this process. Among the various leaders, attention was given to Eun Yong-gi, an elementary social studies educator and editor, during this period. Eun Yong-gi responded to internal and external political, social, and educational demands, leading to the creation of the third elementary social studies curriculum. In the process, he played a significant role in maintaining the integrated nature of elementary social studies. He also made a decisive contribution to reshaping the framework of the third elementary social studies textbook by incorporating the inquiry process, which was introduced as a new method of teaching and learning. He continued to leave many achievements in elementary social studies, including guiding junior scholars on how to compile elementary social studies textbooks. With his efforts, elementary social studies were firmly established, and it is significant that he enabled the realization of lectures that embodied the characteristics of elementary social studies in the classroom. Therefore, his life is regarded as significant in the history of elementary social studies education and the classroom, too, and it will serve as a foundation for the future of elementary social studies.
