신문의 지면 편집은 무엇을 지향하는가? (What Does the Newspaper's Editorial Process Aim to Achieve?)

초록

일간 신문의 지면 편집이 추구하는 바를 이해하고자 신문사 편집국 참여관찰과 신문 지면의 판 변화에 대한 내용 분석을 실시했다. 신문사 편집국에서 61일간 상주하면서 편집 과정을 관찰했으며, 하루 두 번 열리는 지면 편집회의에 대한 관찰 결과를 중심으로 지면 편집의 지향점을 살펴보았다. 이와 함께 오후 5시에 발행되는 신문 초판부터 최대 5판까지 반복되는 최종판까지의 지면 변화를 분석했다. 먼저, 편집국에서 이루어지는 지면 편집회의는 편집국장의 주도로 빠르게 진행되었는데, 주로 기사 본문과 제목에 대한 논의가 중심이 되었다. 편집회의에서는 특히 기사의 제목에 대한 지적과 토론이 가장 많았는데, 제목을 중심으로 하는 논의는 단순히 제목의 표현 등이 적절한지를 검토하는 것을 넘어서서 기사가 핵심 메시지를 제대로 잡았는지 검토하고 기사를 통해 무엇을 강조할 것인지를 결정하는 논조 생산의 과정으로 이해할 수 있다. 지면 편집은 초판 발행 이후 여러 차례의 수정을 거치는데, 3판까지는 양적으로 많은 변화가 있었으며 그 이후에는 예외적으로 드물게 수정이 이루어졌다. 정치 및 사회 관련 기사가 많이 수정되었고, 올림픽 경기의 영향으로 스포츠면의 기사에도 많은 변화가 있었다. 분석을 통해 지면에 대한 적극적이고 세밀한 수정이 늦은 밤까지 지속된다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 신문의 지면 편집이 지향하는 바와 관련하여 다음과 같은 해석을 도출했다. 첫째, 지면 편집을 위한 회의는 편집국장이 주도하는 견고한 위계질서 안에서 신문 지면의 논조를 형성하고 기사의 정확성을 추구하는 과정이다. 둘째, 디지털화의 변화에도 불구하고 신문사는 신문 지면의 완성도를 높이기 위해 편집국의 노동과 시간, 비용을 적극 투자하고 있다. 셋째, 지면의 편집은 사실을 검증하고, 가독성을 제고하며, 논조를 강화하는 방향으로 이루어진다. 넷째, 수도권 배송용 신문이 발행된 이후에 지속되는 지면 편집의 내용은 새로운 사건‧사고 발생이나 중대한 오류에 한정되지 않으며, 가독성 제고와 정보의 삭제‧추가, 기자의 해석‧의견 추가 등 일상적인 편집의 내용을 포함한다. 이를 통해, 지면 편집 과정이 새로운 뉴스를 추가하거나 팩트를 바로잡는 데 국한되지 않고 논조를 생산하는 과정을 포함한다는 점을 다시 확인할 수 있다. 결론적으로, 디지털화와 언론 불신, 독자 감소 등의 위기에도 불구하고 신문사 편집국은 지면의 완성도를 높이는 일에 큰 노력을 기울이고 있으며, 초판 이후의 최종 지면 편집 과정은 사실을 확인하고 정확한 단어와 표현을 모색하는 저널리즘 규범의 실천 과정으로 요약된다. 신문의 지면 편집 과정은 ‘깊고 정확한 팩트’를 추구하는 과정이자 ‘집합적인 편향’으로서 논조를 생산하고 공유하는 과정으로 이해할 수 있다.

영어초록

To understand what daily newspaper editorials seek to achieve, we conducted participant observation of the newsroom and content analysis of newspaper editions. During a 61-day residency in the newsroom, we observed the editorial process and examined the editorial direction of the newspaper, focusing on the twice-daily editorial meetings. In addition, we analyzed the changes in the newspaper from the first edition, which is published at 5 pm, to the final edition, which is repeated up to five times. At first, the editorial meetings in the newsroom were fast-paced, led by the editor-in-chief, and mainly focused on discussing the body and titles of articles. The majority of the discussion during the editorial meeting was about the article's headlines. These deliberations can be interpreted as the process of shaping the tone of the newspaper, as they go beyond simply reviewing the appropriateness of the wording, to reviewing whether the article captures the core message and deciding what to emphasize in the article. The editorials were revised several times after the first edition, with significant quantitative changes through the third edition and only infrequent revisions thereafter. Political and social articles underwent substantial revisions, and the sports section also experienced many changes due to the impact of the Olympic Games. The analysis shows that active and detailed editing on the newspaper pages continues until late night. Based on these findings, we draw the following interpretations regarding the daily newspaper’s editorial orientations. First, the editorial meeting is a process of shaping the editorial tone of the newspaper and pursuing the accuracy of articles within a rigid hierarchy led by the editor-in-chief. Second, despite the changes in digitalization, newspapers continue to invest heavily in the labour, time and money of their editorial staff to ensure the quality of their publications. Third, editing aims to verify facts, improve readability, and strengthen arguments. Fourth, the content of the editorials that continue after the publication of the newspaper for delivery in the metropolitan area is not limited to the occurrence of new events, accidents, or serious errors, but also includes the content of routine editorials such as improving readability, deleting and adding information, and adding interpretations and opinions of reporters. This shows that the editorial process is not limited to adding breaking news or correcting facts, but also includes the process of producing a tone. In conclusion, despite the crisis of digitalization, distrust in journalism and declining readership, newsroom continues to make great efforts to improve the quality of their publications. Also, the process of editing the final print edition is summarized by the practice of journalistic norms which include fact-checking and the search for accurate words and phrases. The editorial process of a newspaper can be understood as a process of pursuing ‘deep and accurate facts’ and a process of producing and sharing a tone as a ‘collective bias’.
