다층성장모형을 적용한 자원봉사참여율의 변화양상 분석 ― 소득 및 성별의 효과 검증 (A Longitudinal Analysis of the Effects of Income and Gender on Volunteering Rates Using a Multilevel Growth Model)

초록

이 연구의 목적은 소득 수준이 자원봉사참여율과 정비례 관계에 놓여있다는 고소득-고자원봉사참여 / 저소득-저자원봉사참여 이론을 종단적 관점에서 재확인하는 데 있다. 특히 시간의 변화에 따른 소득의 변화가 자원봉사참여율의 변화에 미치는 효과에서 남녀 차이가 존재하는지, 만약 존재한다면 어떠한 방식으로 구체화되는지 알아봄으로써 자원봉사참여율의 종단적 변화양상에서 시변요인인 소득과 시불변요인인 성별의 효과를 검증하는 작업에 주력하였다. 이를 위해 한국복지패널 1차년도 부터 10차년도 까지 총 10년 치 자료를 병합하여 분석자료를 확보하였고, 시변요인과 시불변요인, 제1수준과 제2수준 자료, 고정효과와 무선효과의 동시추정이 가능한 다층성장모형을 활용하여 선행연구와 차별화된 방법론을 구사하였다. 연구결과, 조사기간 동안(2006~2015) 자원봉사참여율은 10% 내외에서 보합하는 양상이 관찰되어 자원봉사참여율은 시간의 변화에 따라 유의미하게 변하지 않았음을 확인하였다. 그러나 시간의 변화에 따른 소득의 증가는 자원봉사참여율에 유의미하게 정적인 영향을 미쳤고, 이때 소득의 고정적 변화율은 남녀에 따라 다른 것으로 드러나 시간의 변화에 따른 소득의 증가가 자원봉사참여율 변화에 미치는 정적인 효과에 개인차가 존재한다는 사실을 확인하였다. 연구결과는 특히 소득의 시간적 변화에 따른 자원봉사참여율의 정적인 변화 정도가 남성보다 여성 집단 내에서 현저히 떨어짐을 보여줌으로써 고소득-고자원봉사참여 / 저소득-저자원봉사참여 이론이 모든 상황에 적용 가능한 보편타당한 원리가 아닌, 개인의 특성 및 사회경제적 구조에 따라 차별적으로 발현되는 제한된 이론임을 입증해주었다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 자원봉사참여율 제고를 위한 다양한 봉사인력 관리방안들을 소득 수준 및 남녀 별로 구분하여 제시하였다.

영어초록

In this study, we reassess the argument that people with higher income volunteer more whereas people with lower income volunteer less. Specifically, we focuses on investigating whether there is a within-individual difference in the relationship between time-varying income and volunteering rate and, if so, how the effect is moderated by gender. In so doing, we examine the effects of income as a time-varying factor and gender as a time-invariant on the changing rate of volunteering. To this end, we employ an advanced statistical method that departs from previous studies. Specifically, we use 10 Waves of the Korean Welfare Panel Data (2006~2015) and employ the multilevel growth model which allows us to estimate fixed and random effects simultaneously, as well as utilizing both time-varying and time-invariant factors and level-1 and level-2 data in a single model. Findings show that during the 10 year time period, the rates of volunteering held steady around 10 percent, thereby confirming that the extent to which people volunteer barely changes over time. However, the changing rates of volunteering were significantly positively affected by the changing income level over time. In addition, the effect between two time-varying factors was significantly affected by gender, thereby confirming that there is truly a within-individual difference in the positive relationship between changing level of income and changing rate of volunteering. More specifically, findings indicate that among people with high income, men were more likely to volunteer than women, whereas among people with low income, women were more likely to volunteer than men. The implication of the findings is that we should be careful in endorsing the argument that people with higher income volunteer more whereas people with lower income volunteer less. Not all high-income earners volunteer actively, nor low-income earners volunteer less actively. The extent to which people volunteer depends on personal characteristics and socioeconomic structures surrounding them, such as gender. Based on the findings, we provide the practical implications for the improved volunteers management by income level and gender.
