KOSPI200 지수선물 괴리율:수요기반이론 설명과 미래현물수익률에 대한 예측 (KOSPI200 Index Futures' Mispricing: Demand-Based Explanation and Its Predictive Power)

초록

본 논문은 KOSPI200 지수선물이 내재하는 내재현물지수를 구하고 이를 실제현물지수와 비교하여 괴리율을 구한 후 이 괴리율의 결정요인들을 수요기반이론으로 설명하려고 시도하였다. 월물별로 과거 60거래일의 현물수익률 적률, 심리적 편의 및 선물거래량의 괴리율에 대한 영향력을 분석하였으며 괴리율과 미래현물수익률과의 상관계수 및 앵커링편의와 미래현물수익률과의 상관계수를 구하여 괴리율 및 앵커링편의의 미래현물수익률에 대한 예측력을 고찰하였다.
실증결과, 괴리율은 유의한 음(-)으로 나타나 평균적으로 선물매도수요가 선물매입수요보다 크다는 것과 일치하는 결과를 보였으며, 과거현물수익률 적률의 괴리율에 대한 영향력의 분석결과는 과거 60거래일간의 현물수익률의 표준편차 및 왜도는 괴리율의 유의한 결정요인이었으며 심리적 편의는 지속되었다. 표준편차의 경우 괴리율이 양(+)일 때와 음(-)일 때 회귀계수의 부호가 다르게 나타났다. 괴리율이 양(+)일 선물투자자의 위험선호성향을 나타내었으며 괴리율이 음(-)일 때 위험회피성향을 나타내어 과거수익률의 적률이 위험인지의 정보로 해석되고 있음을 보였다. 양(+)의 왜도 회귀계수의 역시 과거의 정보가 극단의 이익을 추구하려는 성향과 극단의 손실을 회피하려는 성향에 영향을 주고 있음을 보여준다. 미래수익률의 예측력에 대한 분석결과는 괴리율과 미래수익률의 상관계수가 음(-)인 것으로 나타났으며 앵커링편의와 미래현물수익률과의 상관계수 역시 음(-)으로 반전효과를 보였다. 이러한 괴리율 및 앵커링편의의 반전효과는 2주후까지 지속되었다. 이는 시간이 지남에 따라 심리적 편의가 해소되는 방향으로 선물가격이 형성된다는 해석과 일치한다.

영어초록

This paper investigates mispricing of KOSPI200 index futures by calculating the index implied by KOSPI200 index futures through cost of carry model. The mispricing is defined as the difference between the implied index and actual index divided by actual index. The analysis is conducted after dividing the sample into the nearest futures and the second nearest futures.
The pattern of the mispricing is examined and the determinants of the mispricing are investigated separately for the nearest and the second nearest futures. Index futures are found to be priced lower than index spot and the second nearest futures are further underpriced relative to the nearest futures. This is consistent with the notion that negative mispricing is due to the demand for down-side risk hedge, which means that in order to hedge spot position against down-side risk, the demand for futures sale is greater than that for futures purchase.
The determinants of the mispricing which are entered into the regression analysis are past 60 days spot return, standard deviation and skewness of the past spot returns, psychological bias variables and futures trading volume. Evidence indicates that historical volatility, historical skewness, psychological bias variables and option trading volumes are significant determinants of KOSPI200 futures mispricing and demand-based explanations are provided. Empirical results also suggest that the mispricing and anchoring bias have predictive powers on future index returns with the negative correlation between msipricing and future index returns and with the negative correlation between anchoring bias and future index returns. The predictive power lasts up to 2 weeks. The results of negative correlations can be interpreted that psychological biases are proceeding in the direction of diminishing as time is closer to maturity.
Overall, the joint hypothesis that financial markets are efficient and futures are redundant assets is rejected.
