비용의 자의적 분류와 지분율괴리도 (Discretionary Classification of Expense and Wedge between Voting Right and Cash Flow Right)

초록

본 연구는 우리나라 기업지배구조에서 두드러진 현상으로 나타나는 지배주주의 의결권과 배당권의 차이인 지분율괴리도가 비용의 자의적 분류조정에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. McVay(2006)는 지속성이 낮은 영업외손익에 비해 지속성이 높고 투자자의 기대와 주가에 영향을 미치는 것으로 인식되는 영업이익을 증가시키기 위하여 경영자가 기회주의적 동기에 근거하여 영업비용을 영업외비용으로 분류조정하는 이익조정의 행태를 비기대영업이익률과 영업외비용비율 간의 관련성을 통해 분석하였다. 지분율괴리도에 대한 선행연구들을 살펴보면, 지분율괴리도가 큰 기업은 회계정보의 신뢰성 및 유용성이 저하되고, 이익을 상향조정하는 경향을 가진다. 지분율괴리도가 클수록 기업의 정보환경이 나빠지게 되고, 정보비대칭의 정도가 심화된다는 것은 이익조정이 생길 수 있는 전제조건이 형성되었음을 나타낸다. 본 연구는 우리나라 기업지배구조에서 지분율괴리도가 상당한 빈도로 나타나는 현실을 감안할 때 McVay(2006)와 이세철 등(2008)의 연구에 보고된 비기대영업이익률과 영업외비용비율 간에 나타나는 횡단면적 양(+)의 관련성이 지분율괴리도에 의해 체계적으로 영향을 받는지 실증분석하였다.
분석결과, McVay(2006) 모형에 교호변수로 추가된 지분율괴리도는 당기 비기대영업이익률과 당기 일시적 영업외비용비율 간의 관련성에 추가적으로 유의적인 양(+)의 관계를 보였고, 1년 후의 비기대영업이익률 변동과 당기 일시적 영업외비용비율 간의 관련성에는 추가적으로 유의한 음(-)의 관계를 보였다. 이는 지분율괴리도가 클수록 McVay(2006)가 보고한 비용의 분류조정 정도가 심화됨을 시사한다. 본 연구의 결과는 기업지배구조의 특징이 기업의 분류조정을 통한 이익조정 행태와 관련성이 있다는 분석내용을 보고하고 있고, 규제당국이 참고할 만한 자료를 제공한다고 판단된다.

영어초록

This study examines the effect of the wedge between voting right and cash flow right on earnings management using classification shifting. McVay(2006) finds evidence that managers opportunistically shift expenses from core earnings to special items to increase reported operating income. Based on a model of core earnings, the empirical test examines the relation between unexpected core earnings and special items.
Prior research on the wedge has documented two streams of findings. First, the wedge is negatively related with reliability and usefulness of accounting information. Second, the wedge is positively related with earnings management metric, accruals in particular. The negative relation between wedge and firms’ information environment suggests that the degree of information asymmetry deteriorates as the wedge increases. And persistent existence of information asymmetry provides necessary condition for earnings management. Considering the relatively high frequency of the wedge in Korean listed firms, an empirical test on the relation between the wedge and the degree of earnings management using classification shifting appears to be worthwhile. This study empirically examines the effect of the wedge on the cross-sectional positive relation between unexpected core earnings and special items as reported in McVay(2006) and Lee et al.(2008).
The test model added the wedge variable as an interaction term into McVay(2006) model. The empirical results show additional positive relation between current unexpected core earnings and current special items. And there was an additional negative relation between future unexpected core earnings change and current special items. The results indicate that the wedge is positively significantly related with the degree of classification shifting. The results of this study contributes to the literature by providing evidence that firms’ governance characteristics represented by the wedge systematically affect earnings management behavior using classification shifting. The finding of this paper should be informative to regulators.
