유튜브 뉴스채널의 신뢰도 형성 메커니즘 분석: 뉴스품질 인식과 정파성기대부합 인식이 신뢰도에 미치는 영향을 중심으로 (The Credibility Building Mechanism of YouTube News Channels: Focusing on the Effect of News Quality and Partisan Expectation Fitting on News Credibility)

초록

본 연구는 주요 뉴스 이용 경로로 부상한 유튜브 플랫폼에서, 기성언론이 뉴스를 제작하는 유튜브 지상파채널, 유튜브 종편채널과 인지도가 높은 인플루언서가 제작하는 유튜브 인플루언서채널의 신뢰도 형성 메커니즘을 비교 분석함으로써 뉴스이용자들이기성언론이 아닌 일종의 대안미디어인 유튜브 인플루언서채널의 뉴스를 신뢰하는 이유에 대해 알아보고자 했다. 구체적으로 정파적 미디어가 증가한 현 매체 환경에서 뉴스이용자들이 정치 성향이 비슷한 뉴스를 보고자 하는 기대가 충족된 상태인 ‘정파성기대부합(partisan expectation fitting)’ 인식이 높을 때 신뢰도를 높게 평가하는지 알아봄으로써, 정치적 성향이 유사한 뉴스의 신뢰도를 높게 평가하는 인지적 기제를 밝히고자 했다. 분석 결과 뉴스이용자들은 기존 저널리즘 연구에서 언론 신뢰를 구성한다고봤던 공정성, 정확성, 완전성 등 뉴스품질을 높게 평가할 때 신뢰도를 형성함과 동시에정파성기대부합 인식이 높을 때 역시 신뢰도를 형성하고 있었다. 대표적인 정파적 미디어인 유튜브 인플루언서채널 뿐 아니라 유튜브 지상파채널, 유튜브 종편채널 이용자도 정파성기대부합 인식이 높을 때 신뢰도를 형성하는 것으로 관찰돼 정파성기대부합인식을 통한 신뢰도는 다매체시대에 뉴스이용자들이 신뢰를 형성하는 의미있는 신뢰도 형성 메커니즘이라고 볼 수 있었다. 뉴스품질 가운데 지상파채널은 정확성이, 유튜브 종편채널과 유튜브 인플루언서채널은 완전성이 신뢰도 형성에 큰 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다. 연구를 위해 전국 규모의 온라인 설문조사(N = 785)를 실시했다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to understand news credibility-building mechanisms in the multi-platform news environment. By comparing the news credibility-building mechanisms among users of YouTube terrestrial broadcast channels, YouTube general programming channels, and YouTube influencer channels, researchers aimed to reveal how and why news users trust YouTube influencer channels. Based on the results of prior studies, researchers predicted that the users of YouTube terrestrial broadcast channels and YouTube general programming channels would build news credibility when they perceive the news quality(fairness, accuracy, completeness) is high. Researchers also tried to find out news users’ credibility-building mechanism for partisan media. Researchers examined whether the degree of partisan expectation fitting, which refers to a satisfying state when people consume ideologically congruent news, is associated with news credibility. Researchers predicted that YouTube TV channel users, as well as YouTube influencer channel users, would build news credibility when they perceive the level of partisan expectation fitting is high. The results show that news users build news credibility not only through the perception of news quality but also through the perception of partisan expectation fitting. The credibility building mechanism through the partisan expectation fitting, was observed among YouTube terrestrial broadcast channel users and YouTube general programming channel users, as well as YouTube influencer channel users. Second, findings show that YouTube influencer channel users and YouTube general programming channel users evaluated the level of completeness as being high. In contrast, YouTube terrestrial broadcast channel users evaluated the accuracy level of YouTube terrestrial broadcast channel news high. In sum, this study identified a cognitive credibility-building mechanism where the news users trust news content based on partisan expectation fitting. This study also found that news quality also plays an important role in assessing the credibility of YouTube influencer channels. Researchers recommend that legacy media need to provide quality journalism, regardless of the political orientation of news users, to restore its function as a public sphere. Further theoretical and practical implications are discussed. A nationwide online survey (N = 785) was conducted.
