한대 공예품의 유익사자(有翼獅子) 도상을 통해 본 페르시아 미술의 동점 (Eastward Spread of Persian Art viewed through the Iconography of a Lion with Wings in the Craftwork during the Han Dynasty)

초록

랑의 석암리(石巖里) 9호분의 동준(銅樽) 등을 비롯하여 기원전 1세기 한대 금속공예와 옥공예품 등의 공예품에는 매 또는 독수리의 날개를 단 사자, 즉 혼합동물인 유익사자(有翼獅子)라는 이색적인 모티프가 표현되어 주목된다. 사자는 제왕의 권위와 용맹을 상징하는 의미로 서아시아에서 즐겨 사용되었던 제재이다. 아시리아의 사자 도상은 기원전 6세기 고대 근동의 최대 군주국으로 부상한 아케메네스 페르시아로 이어졌다. 한대 구축된 실크로드 중 오아시스길과 바닷길을 한 로마와 중앙아시아 국가와의 교섭에만 집중이 되었고, 그간 페르시아 문화권과 한문화와의 교섭관계는 조명이 되지 못하였다.
이에 이 연구에서는 유익사자 도상을 통해 한대 미술에 보이는 페르시아 미술의 수용과정을 밝혀 보았다. 특히 유익사자를 매개로 페르시아 문화권과의 관계를 살펴본 것은 혼합동물인 유익사자가 사카나 흉노의 금공이나 섬유공예에서 즐겨 사용되었기 때문이다. 이는 페르시아 문화의 동점과정에 북방 유목민족의 역할이 있었다. 한의 공방에 페르시아 공예의 영향을 받은 사카계와 흉노계의 장인 편입된 과정을 살펴본 바 있다.
한대 미술에 수용된 유익사자는 중국인들의 사고체계에서 새롭게 인식되었다. 한대 무덤을 지키는 유익사자형 벽사는 묘주의 영혼이 仙界에 진입하지 못하도록 방해하는 악한 존재들을 제거하는 역할을 한다. 두려움의 대상인 악귀를 물리칠 수 있는 존재로 서역에서 온 사자가 그 대상이 된 것이다. 더욱이 이 사자에 날개를 더함으로서 실제 존재하는 동물에서 환상적인 신적인 힘을 가진 존재로서 격상되었을 뿐 아니라 사자에 달린 날개로서 묘주를 선계로 승천시킬 수 있는 능력이 있는 동물로 재탄생된 것이다. 유익사자가 본래 페르시아와 전혀 다른 개념인 벽사로 재탄생한 것은 동서교섭에 따른 새로운 문화변용이라는 점에서 흥미롭다.

영어초록

In craftwork like metal crafts and jade crafts during the Han Dynasty in the 1st Century B.C., including copper kegs in Ancient Tomb No. 9 in Seogam-ri, Lelang, an exotic motif of a lion with a hawk or eagle’s wings, a mixed animal, Yuiksaja is expressed, which draws attention. The lion is a subject matter often used in West Asia, meaning the emperor’s authority and courage. Assyrian lion iconography led to Achaemenid Persia that emerged as the largest monarchy in the ancient Near East in the 6th century B.C. Studies focused on the negotiations between Rome and Central Asia on the Oasis Road of the Silk Road established during the Han Dynasty and sea routes while no light has been shed on the relationship of the negotiation between the Persian cultural area with the Han culture.
Thus, this study discussed the process of accepting Persian art in art during the Han Dynasty through the iconography of the lion with wings. Especially, this study examined the relationship with the Persian cultural area with the medium of the lion with wings because a mixed animal, the lion with wings was often used in Saka or Xiongnu metalwork or textile craft. For this, northern nomadic tribes played a role in the process of the eastward spread of the Persian culture. Research has been conducted on the process in which Saka and Xiongnu master craftsmen influenced by the Persian craft were incorporated into the workshops of Han.
The lion with wings accepted by art during the Han Dynasty was newly perceived in the way of thinking in the Chinese people. The lion with wings-type exorcism guarding the tombs during the Han Dynasty plays a role in eliminating the evil beings that disturb the soul of the tomb owners from entering the fairyland. The lion that came from the countries bordering on Western China became a being that could drive out an evil spirit, an object of fear. Moreover, by adding wings to the lion, it was upgraded to a being with the fantastic divine power from an animal existing in reality and was born again as an animal having the ability to ascend the owner of the tomb to ascend to the fairyland. The lion with wings was born again as exorcism, a totally different concept from Persia, and it is interesting that it is a new cultural transformation according to the negotiation between the east and the west.
