글로벌 유니콘 기업을 창출하는 영향 요인 분석 : 혁신생태계 관점을 중심으로 (Analysis of Influencing Factors That Create Global Unicorn Companies: Focusing on the Innovation Ecosystem)

초록

본 연구는 유니콘 기업을 창출하는 영향 요인을 분석하기 위해 혁신생태계를 구성하는 혁신역량과 창업역량을 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이에 따라 유니콘 기업 창출에 어떠한 혁신생태계 환경을 조성해야 하는지 알아보며, 실증분석을 통해 각각의 역량과 관련한 설명변수들의 영향 여부를 분석하는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 영향 요인으로 혁신역량은 인구 백만 명 대비 연구개발 인력 수, GDP 대비 연구개발 투자율, ICT 접근성, 이공계 졸업생 비율, 산학 연구협력, 창업역량은 3차 교육 졸업생 비율, 기업가정신 인식능력, GDP 대비 벤처캐피탈(VC) 투자, 인터넷 이용자 수, 기업가적 의도, 실패에 대한 두려움, 국내시장 규모를 설정하였다. 총 11개 가설을 설정하여 포아송과 음이항 회귀모형 분석을 진행하였다. 모형은 음이항 회귀모형이 더 적합한 것으로 나타났으며, 그 결과를 살펴보면 혁신역량에서는 모든 변수가 유의한 것으로 나타났으며, 창업역량은 GDP 대비 VC 투자, 기업가정신 인식능력이 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 분석 결과에 비추어 스타트업이 유니콘 기업과 같은 성장을 이루기 위한 학문적 시사점은 첫째, 기업의 혁신생태계 내에서 혁신역량이 수행하는 핵심 역할을 조명하였다. 둘째, 벤처캐피탈(VC)과 기업가정신 인식능력 등의 변수가 창업 환경에 필수 요소임을 밝히며 기업가적 역량의 복잡성을 강조하였다. 정책적 시사점은 첫째, 스타트업의 혁신역량을 강화할 수 있는 연구개발 투자와 인재 유치를 위한 지원책이 수반되어야 한다. 둘째, 스타트업을 유니콘 기업으로 육성하기 위한 정책 마련의 목표가 양적 확대라는 단일 추구를 넘어 혁신생태계적 순환의 산물의 될 수 있도록 해야 한다. 셋째, VC 등 관련 투자 시장의 활성화는 물론 유니콘 기업의 성공적인 엑시트(exit)까지 포함하는 투자 선순환 체계가 구축되어야 한다.

영어초록

To analyze the influencing factors that contribute to the creation of unicorn companies, this study focuses on the innovation capabilities and entrepreneurial capabilities that constitute the innovation ecosystem. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to determine the type of innovation ecosystem environment necessary for the formation of a unicorn company and to conduct empirical analysis to examine the impact of explanatory variables related to each capability. The factors influencing innovation capacity include the following: the number of R&D personnel per million population, the R&D investment ratio relative to GDP, ICT accessibility, the ratio of science and engineering graduates, and industry-academia research cooperation. Entrepreneurial capabilities were determined by considering the following factors: the ratio of tertiary education graduates, entrepreneurship recognition ability, VC investment as a percentage of GDP, the number of Internet users, entrepreneurial intention, fear of failure, and domestic market size. A total of 11 hypotheses were formulated, and Poisson and negative binomial regression model analyses were conducted. The negative binomial regression model was found to be more appropriate, and the results showed that all variables were significant in explaining innovation capability. Regarding entrepreneurial capabilities, VC investment relative to GDP and entrepreneurship awareness were found to be significant.
According to the results of the analysis, the academic implications for startups to achieve growth similar to unicorn companies are as follows: First, it highlights the key role that innovation capabilities play within a company's innovation ecosystem. Second, the complexity of entrepreneurial capabilities was emphasized by revealing that variables such as venture capital (VC) and entrepreneurship recognition ability are essential elements in the startup environment. First, the policy implications should be accompanied by support measures to invest in research and development and attract talent that can strengthen the innovation capabilities of startups. Second, the goal of establishing policies to foster startups into unicorn companies must go beyond the single pursuit of quantitative expansion to become a product of the innovation ecosystem cycle. Third, a virtuous investment cycle system must be established that not only revitalizes related investment markets such as VCs but also includes the successful exit of unicorn companies.
