예비교사의 유아관찰 경험의 의미: 부적응 유아를 중심으로 (The Meaning of Pre-service Teachers' Child Observation: Focused on Maladaptive Children)

초록

본 연구는 유아관찰을 통해 부적응 유아에 대한 예비교사의 인식 변화를 살펴보고자 하였다. 연구 참여자는 서울의 4년제 C대학 3학년에 재학 중인 예비교사 30명이었다. 연구자는 예비교사들의 관찰일지와 예비교사들과의 면담을 통해 자료를 수집하였다. 예비교사들은 유아관찰 경험을 통해 외현화된 부적응 행동뿐만 아니라 내재화된 부적응 행동까지도 인식하게 되어 부적응 행동의 판별을 보다 확대된 범위에서 깊이 있게 이해하게 되었다. 또한 부적응 행동의 원인을 유아 개인의 발달상의 문제뿐만 아니라 가정과 교실환경에서도 기인한다는 것을 종합적으로 이해할 수 있게 되었다. 이와 더불어 유아의 부적응 행동에 대한 올바로 대처하기 위한 적절한 교수법을 나름대로 발견할 수 있게 되었다. 이러한 과정을 통해 예비교사들은 부적응 행동을 보다 정확히 판별할 수 있게 되는 한편 부적응 유아에 대한 공감적 지원을 확대해갈 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 예비교사들이 이전에 가지고 있던 부적응 행동에 대한 개념과 원인에 대한 미흡한 해석 등에 대해 부적응 유아관찰 과정을 통해 반성하는 과정에서 이루어진 것이다. 따라서 예비교사들이 부적응 행동에 대한 올바른 인식을 가질 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 유아관찰과 반성적 성찰의 기회를 제공하도록 돕는 것이 필요하다는 시사점을 얻을 수 있었다.

영어초록

This study explores the meaning of pre-service teachers' maladaptive child observations by 30 university juniors in Seoul. The data were collected for 14 weeks by means of written journals and deep interviews of the pre-service teachers. The findings from the collected data are as followings:First, the pre-service teachers recognize the maladaptive behavior in consideration of the developmentally inappropriate behavior among peer groups through the observation experiences. This helps pre-service teachers to identify not only the visible but also invisible maladaptive behaviors (e.g. shyness, depression, anxiety, etc) so as to understand the complicated and extended meaning of maladaptive behavior.
Second, the pre-service teachers understand the contexts of the maladaptive behaviors of young children through observation. The pre-service teachers presume the causes of child's maladaptive behavior attributing it to their parents, then collect information to prove the assumptions. If the expected causes are found to be false, they set different assumptions to figure out the genuine factors related to generate the maladaptive behaviors. In this process, pre-service teachers perceive that the origin of children's maladaptive behavior varies from the child's home environment to kindergarten classrooms.
Third, the pre-service teachers appreciate the positive aspects of maladaptive behaviorial children. The observation of maladaptive child behavior provides the opportunity to understand the young children's areas of merit and strength.
Last, the pre-service teachers think the importance of observations to discern children's maladaptive behaviors from the normal. The pre-service teachers can have more accurate eyes for the maladaptive behavior than when they did not observed the young children before.
These research findings imply that pre-service teachers can learn effectively from the case study through the observation of the maladaptive child behavior. To write journals during the observations is helpful for pre-service teachers to reflect on their observations so as to be well prepared in-service teachers to deal skillfully with maladaptive child behavior after their teacher education training.
