2011년 2월 11일 대한해협에서 관측된 극저기압에 대한 고해상도 수치모의 연구 (A Polar Low Observed Over the Korea Strait on 11 February 2011: High-resolution Numerical Simulations)

초록

2011년 2월 11일 영동 해안 지역에 최대 1 m의 대설을 동반한 극저기압(polar low)은 발달한 종관규모 저기압으로부터 북서쪽 방향으로 뻗은 기압골이 활성화되어 대한해협 부근에서 생성되었다. 이 극저기압 사례에 대하여 고분해능의 초기 및 경계장을 적용한 WRF(Weather Research and Forecasting) 모델(2 km 분해능)을 이용한 수치모의를 수행하여, 극저기압의 구조를 조사하였다. 성숙 단계에 해당하는 11일 2100 UTC의 수치모의 결과에서, 극저기압 주변의 풍속은 극저기압 중심을 기준으로 동쪽보다는 서쪽 영역에서 보다 컸으며, 현열 속(sensible heat flux)과 잠열 속(latent heat flux)을 합한 지상 열 속(the surface heat fluxes)도 동쪽보다 서쪽 영역에서 더 크게 나타났다. 그리고 극저기압의 중심에 대한 연직 구조를 분석한 결과, 극저기압의 중심에는 구름이 없는 맑은 구역인 눈(eye)이 위치함을 알 수 있었으며, 눈이 위치한 830 hPa 이하의 고도에서는 건조한 하강기류가 지배적이었다. 그리고 극저기압의 눈이 위치한 870 hPa 고도에서 주변보다 약 3~5℃ 더 따뜻하고, 등온위선이 아래로 쳐짐이 뚜렷하였다. 한편, 유적 분석(trajectory analysis)에서 극저기압의 온난 핵으로 유입되는 공기덩어리들은 운동이 시작되는 위치에 따라, 온난 핵의 북쪽 방향에 위치한 공기덩어리들(Ps-N), 온난 핵의 동쪽 방향에 위치한 공기덩어리들(Ps-E), 온난 핵의 서쪽 방향에 위치한 공기덩어리들(Ps-W)로 각각 분류될 수 있었다. 그리고 공기덩어리들 의 연직 움직임을 통하여 극저기압의 온난 핵은 주로 하강기류에 의해 단열 압축적으로 가열되어 형성되었음을 확인하였다.

영어초록

On 11 February 2011, a polar low, accompanied by heavy snowfall that occurred in the Yeongdong coastal area and reached almost 1 m at the maximum, generated in the vicinity of the Korea Strait due to the development of a surface trough that had stretched northwestward from a developed synoptic-scale parent low. This polar low was numerically simulated using WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting) model (2 km resolution) applying high resolution initial and lateral boundary conditions data to investigate the structure of the polar low. The numerical simulation valid at 2100 UTC on February 11 that corresponded to the mature stage indicated that the wind speeds around the polar low were higher in the western area than the eastern area of the center of the polar low, and the surface heat fluxes, which are the sum of the sensible heat flux and the latent heat flux, were also stronger in the western area than the eastern area. The vertical structure of the center of the polar low from the simulation showed that the cloud-free eye was located at the center of the polar low and dry downdrafts were dominant at altitudes lower than 830 hPa where the eye of the polar low was located. In addition, the potential temperature of the warm core at the altitude of 870 hPa where the eye was located, was approximately 3~5℃ higher than the surroundings, and the lowering of the isotherms of the potential temperature below the warm core was clearly seen. Meanwhile, in a trajectory analysis, the air parcels flowing into the warm core of the polar low could be grouped into those (Ps-N) that were located on the north of the warm core, those (Ps-E) that were located on the east of the warm core, and those (Ps-W) that were located on the west of the warm core according to the positions where the movements began. And from the vertical movement of the parcels it was also confirmed that the warm core of the polar low was formed mainly through adiabatic warming by downdrafts.
