해방기 대구․경북 지역의 연극·영화 운동에 관한 사례 연구 : ‘10월영화공장’ 을 중심으로 (A Study on the Liberal Nationalist ‘Cinema and Theater Movement’ in Daegu During the Time of National Emancipation(1945-1948) : Case Study of October Cinema Factory)

초록

이 논문은 부분적이나마 해방기(1945-1948) 진보적 민족주의자들이 전개한 대구․경북지방 영화․연극운동의 실재를 발굴하고 그 성격을 규명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 1945년 10월 1일 창립되어 해방기 국가 건설기에 민족․국가․민중․향토의 정체성을 심는 한편 정치․경제․문화 담론을 전파한 매체로서 주목할 만한 활동을 전개한 10월영화공장의 궤적을 추적하였다. 10월영화공장은 10월영화뉴스, 문화영화, 계몽영화 제작 등 영화를 미디어로 삼아 조직적으로 문화운동을 전개하였으며 이같은 영화․연극 운동은 지방 도시로서는 대구가 유일무이한 것으로 파악되고 있다. 이처럼 해방기 대구지방의 연극․영화운동이 활발했던 것은 진보적․민족적 연극․영화인들의 연극․영화가 해방기의 역사성을 이해하고 민족적 메시지를 담아내 민중들의 큰 호응을 받음으로써 가능하였다.
해방기 대구․경북 영화․연극운동 주도세력의 맥은 대구 ‘무대협회’, 대구 ‘가두극장’, ‘코레아영화제작소’, ‘10월영화공장’ 등으로 이어졌다. 해방기 대구의 문화운동 주도세력은 일제강점기 일제에 수탈․억압당하는 농민과 노동자, 학생을 비롯한 식민지 민중의 삶을 표현한 비흥행적 영화․연극을 개척하였다. 이들이 일제의 혹독한 탄압을 받으며 활동한 경험은 해방기 미군정의 탄압에 합리적․적극적으로 대응할 수 있는 밑거름이 되었다. 대구․경북의 해방기 영화․연극운동 주도세력들은 이론투쟁보다는 현장에서 민주적 민족국가․민족문화수립 건설운동이라는 대안을 제시하였다. 본 연구는 역사적 자료 발굴 등을 통해 지금까지 공백으로 남아있던 해방기 대구․경북 진보세력이 펼친 영화․연극 운동의 실체를 확인하였다는데 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to define and describe the nature of the liberal nationalist ‘Cinema and Theatre Movement’ in Daegu and the Gyungbuk area during the period of national emancipation(1945-1948) in Korea. There exists virtually no research that traces the trajectory of local ‘Cinema and Theater Movement’ in Korea, especially in regard to the efforts made by liberal political blocs which attempted to achieve independent nation building without outside intervention. The primary purpose of this research is to recover and bring light to historical documents including newspaper articles and photos that remain unnoticed in the turmoil of political change in post-war Korean society. To achieve this, rare newspaper articles published in Daegu and Gyungbuk were collected. Through content analysis of newspapers, this research reveals ideological orientations, important actors, and specific activities of liberal political blocs. Local residents who either witnessed or engaged in the Cinema and Theater Movement were also interviewed.
Historical documents and interviews revealed the existence of the ‘October Cinema Factory’ which was founded on October 1945 in Daegu․Gyungbuk region. This organization actively engaged in imbuing the identity of the new nation and both national and local values/traditions/cultural practices to the Korea public through street performances and local cinema productions. The ‘October Cinema Factory’ also produced a variety of cinemas for the education and emancipation of the local people. The ‘October Cinema Factory’ was the only local cultural organization that pursued the empowerment of the public as well as the encouragement of political participation by utilizing popular cultural products as its means. The primary contribution of the present study is that it brings to light and confirms the existence of liberal bloc activities for political empowerment of Daegu and Gyungbuk residents, which have not been discussed in previous studies. The study also describes, with considerable historical evidence, the emergence, development, and decline of this movement in rich detail.
