원불교의 후천개벽(後天開闢) 세계관 (The Won-Buddhist View of the Great Opening Era of the Latter Heaven)

초록

소태산 박중빈(1891-1943)은 1916년 깨달음을 얻은 후 원불교(圓佛敎)의 전신인 불법연구회(佛法硏究會)를 창립하여 “물질이 개벽하니 정신을 개벽하자”를 개교이념으로 삼았다. 원불교의 개벽사상은 새로운 낙원세계를 추구하는 한국 신종교의 선후천 개벽사조와 깊은 연관성이 있다. 신종교 창시자들은 후천개벽의 우주적 시간성과 공간성, 그리고 개벽을 이루는 주체의 문제에 대해 다양한 견해를 견지하고 있다. 소태산은 전통적인 방식을 따라 선후천을 구분하였으며, 선천시대는 밤과 같이 어둡고 불평등한 음(陰)의 시대이며 상극의 시대인 반면, 후천개벽의 시대는 대낮 같이 밝아 평등과 상생(相生)의 조화로운 양(陽)의 세계를 의미한다.
원불교는 후천개벽시대에 ‘일원상(一圓相)의 진리’를 신앙하고 수행하며 인류공동체가 지향해야할 새로운 문명사회, 즉 물질문명과 정신문명이 조화 발전된 광대무량한 문명세계를 제시하고 실현하고자 하였다. ‘과학’은 의식주 등 인간의 육신 생활을 편리하고 윤택하게 하는 ‘물질문명’의 혜택은 빠르고 제한적이지만, ‘도학(道學)’은 정신적 생활을 풍요롭게 하는 것으로서 ‘정신문명’은 원래 형상 없는 사람의 마음을 단련하는 것이므로 그 효과가 더디게 나타나지만 국한이 없는 ‘도덕문명’을 의미한다.
물질문명에만 치우치고 정신문명을 등한시하면 마치 철 모르는 아이에게 칼을 들려 준 것과 같아서 어느 날 어느 때에 무슨 화를 당할 지 모를 것이니, 이는 육신은 완전하나 정신에 병이 든 불구자와 같다. 반면, 정신문명만 되고 물질문명이 없는 세상은 정신은 완전하나 육신에 병이 든 불구자와 같다. 소태산은 도학과 과학의 관계는 主從의 관계로서 과학문명을 선용할 정신문명이 발전되어야 하며, 내외 문명이 병진되는 시대라야 비로소 결함 없는 평화 안락한 세계가 될 것이라 보고 있다.
또한, 원불교의 사은(四恩)사상은 한국 전래의 해원상생 사상과 불교의 연기적(緣起的) 세계관을 바탕으로 발전된 사상이다. 해원상생의 은(恩) 세계는 우주내의 모든 생령과 존재가 총체적으로 연기적 은혜의 관계를 지니고 있음을 설정한다. 모든 존재가 없어서는 살 수 없는 필연적이며 원초적 은임을 강조하고 은의 구체적 범주를 4가지인 천지은, 부모은, 동포은, 법률은을 통해 은혜로운 개벽세계를 이루고자 한 것이다. 원불교는 사은의 원리에 바탕한 개벽실현을 하고자 한다.
인류사회의 개벽실현의 주체성은 어디에 있는가에 대한 논의가 필요하다. 대체적으로, 한국 신종교의 창시자들은 개벽의 문명사회가 우주의 순환하는 원리에 따라 우주의 진강급(進降級)과 후천개벽이 저절로 이루어거나 상제(上帝) 또는 미륵불과 같은 주세불의 역량에 의해 이루어질 수 있다. 소태산은 먼저 깨친 개인적 존재가 개벽실현의 됨을 역설하고 있다. 참 문명세계를 이루는 주체는 나 자신을 비롯한 인류공동체 그리고 후천개벽시대의 우주적 시간의 순환하는 이치가 함께 어우러져 이루어지는 공동 과제라 여긴 것이 특징이다.

영어초록

Park Chung-bin(1891-1943) known by his religious name ‘Sotaesan’ achieved his enlightenment in 1916 and founded the Research Society of Buddha Dharma (K. Bulbeob-Yeonguhoi), the former religious title of Won-Buddhism, in 1924. The foundation slogan of Won-Buddhism is “With this Great Opening of Matter, let there be a Great Opening of Spirit.”The thought of the Great Opening Era of the Latter Heaven (K. Hucheon-Gaebyeok) in Won-Buddhism is deeply related with the various new religious movements in Korea to prospect a new paradise of the world. The founders of new religious movements expounded the thought of the Great Opening Era of the Latter Heaven in different ways relating to the main figure to actualize the cosmic time and space of the Great Opening.
Sotaesan followed the traditional division of the era into Hucheon (K.) or Latter Heaven and Seoncheon (K.) or Antecedent Heaven. While Seoncheon refers to the yin (陰, negative or inactive) world of darkness and injustice, Hucheon refers to the yang (陽, positive or active) world of brightness, equilibrium, and co-living in harmony.
Based upon the faith and practice of ‘The Truth of Irwonsang’, Won-Buddhism aims to establish a vast and immeasurable paradise or a new civilized society of human beings which could be realized when material civilization and spiritual culture advance in balance. ‘Study of cience’is ‘material civilization’which mainly provides comforts for our physical lives; its results manifest quickly, but its merit is limited. On the other hand, ‘Study of the Way’is ‘spiritual civilization’or ‘civilization of Way and Virtue’which enhance human spirituality of formless; its results are slow, but its merit is unlimited. If, as is the case today, we are partial to material civilization and ignore spiritual civilization, we will not know when we may meet with danger like a careless child playing with a knife. Also, we would be like a mentally handicapped person who is in perfect physical health. On the other hand, a world with only an advanced spiritual civilization but no material civilization is like a physically handicapped person in perfect mental health. Although ‘Study of the Way’is primary and ‘study of science’is secondary, a flawless world of peace and comfort will be achieved only in an age that has developed both inward and outward civilization by expanding spiritual power to enable to utilize material power.
The Won-Buddhist thought of Grace has been developed based on the thought of ‘Resolving grudges and co-living in harmony’(K. Haewon-sangsaeng) in Korean tradition and ‘Co-dependant Arising’(S. pratl-tyasamutpa-da) in Buddhist tradition. In the graceful world of ‘Resolving grudges and co-living in harmony’, all things and living beings of the universe are mutually beneficial as a wholeness. In Won-Buddhism, Heaven and Earth, Parents, Fellow Beings, and Law (moral, religious, civil, and penal) are acknowledged as the Fourfold Grace. A human being could not survive without the graces of Heaven and Earth, Parents, Fellow Beings, and Law. Therefore, Won-Buddhism tries to realize a new Great Opening Era based on the principle of Fourfold Grace.
It is also important to discuss about the main figure who actualizes the Great Opening Era. Generally, the founders of new Korean religions insisted that a civilized society of the New Era could be brought either by following the principle of circulation of cosmic time or by the power of the Maitreya Buddha or Sangje (Supreme being). But, Sotaesan emphasized the role of an individual person who achieved an enlightenment in advance to bring the New Great Opening Era. The new paradise is a common goal to be achieved in cooperation with all human beings in accordance with the principle of cosmic time.
