소년원학생 재범방지 통합프로그램 개발 연구 (Study on Developing an Integrated Program for the Prevention of Juvenile Recidivism)

This study aimed to develop an effective and systematic integrated program for preventing juvenile recidivism; it was based on an analysis of the current state of juvenile character education and a survey of the needs of field experts and students in juvenile reformatories (JRs).
In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 field experts and 10 juveniles for the needs survey. Among the 10 JRs nationwide, one teacher in charge of character education and one student each were recommended from eight JRs—those in Seoul, Anyang, Chuncheon, Cheongju, Jeonju, Gwangju, Daegu, and Busan. In addition, two former and current employees and two youths were recommended by the Korea Juvenile Protection Association. The survey was conducted through individual meetings with each participant between June 2 and 26, 2020, and the author personally interviewed the participants.
Based on the results of the interviews and the theoretical grounds, an integrated program to prevent juvenile recidivism has been developed. This program covers three areas with a total of 12 sessions: establishing a relationship with oneself comprises two sessions on self-esteem—one on self-reflection and the other on anger management; establishing relationships with others comprises two sessions on communications, two on social skills, and one on victim empathy; and establishing relations with society at large comprises one session each on abiding the law, etiquette, and economic education.
