디지털 시대의 새로운 ‘형식’과 ‘활동’으로서 영화비평: 시네 토크, 팟캐스트, 비디오 비평을 중심으로 (Film Criticism as New Forms and Practices in the Digital Era: Cine Talk, Podcast, and Videographic Criticism)

초록

본 연구는 인터넷을 통해 영화에 대한 정보와 지식이 대중화되고 미디어 환경의 변화로 인해 영화의 존재양식과 비평의 형식 자체가 다변화되고 확장 되는 동시대 한국영화비평의 새로운 경향을 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 1990년대부터 시작된 영화잡지의 춘추전국 시대를 지나 2000년대 중반 이후 는 흔히 비평의 위기나 쇠퇴기로 인식되곤 하지만, 중심화된 비평저널이 사라지고 직업적인 비평가가 줄어들었을 뿐 온라인과 오프라인, 인쇄 비평을 넘어 말하는 비평, 또는 영상 비평, 공적 미디어와 1인 미디어를 넘나드는 비평의 주제 및 방법론의 다양성은 동시대 영화비평의 주목할 만한 새로운 국면이다. 즉, 영화의 존재론과 비평의 미학 및 정치학에 따른 패러다임 변화는 그 어느 때보다 역동적으로 확장되고 재구성되고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 디지털 시대의 영화비평 탐구는 전통적인 방식인 ‘비평이념’이나 ‘비평세대’, ‘인쇄매체’ 등을 통해 제도화되거나 중심화된 담론만이 아닌, 새롭게 분화되 고 재편된 ‘비평형식’과 트랜스미디어적인 ‘유사 비평 활동’에 대한 주목이 긴요하다. 세대적으로는 디지털 네이티브로 태어나 영화비평가의 제도화된 게이트키핑을 가로질러 복수의 비평 활동을 분산적으로 수행하고 있는 밀레 니얼 비평 세대의 비평장의 확장과 아마추어리즘의 함의가 중요하다. 이에 따라 이 논문은 2010년대를 전후해 부상한 동시대 한국영화 비평형식과 실천 의 새로운 경향을 시네 토크, 팟캐스트, 비디오 비평을 통해 고찰한다. 기본적인 관점은 전통적인 비평담론에서 중요했던 비평의 본질(미학, 평가, 정전화 등)을 염두에 두면서, 새로운 비평 형식들이 가진 역할 및 기능 변화와 비 평세대의 분화, 매체 전환과 미디어 산업의 재편과 관련한 지속 가능한 비평 양식과 활동을 도전과 가능성의 시각에서 탐구하는 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine new trends in contemporary Korean film criticism, in which the mode of existence of cinema and the forms of criticism are diversified and expanded due to the easy accessibility of film information and knowledge through the Internet and the changes in the media environment. The period since the mid-2000s, after the rise and fall of film magazines that began in the mid-1990s, is often perceived as one of crisis or decline in film criticism, with the disappearance of centralized film journals and the decrease of professional critics. However, the period has also witnessed the diversification of the themes and approaches of film criticism both in online and offline spaces, which is evidenced by the emergence of verbal and visual criticism beyond written language across public and personal media, as a notable new tendency of contemporary film criticism. In other words, these new forms and practices attest to the ways in which the paradigms of film criticism have been dynamically expanded and reconfigured more than ever before in dialogue with the shifting ontology of cinema. Therefore, investigating film criticism in the digital age demands attention to newly differentiated and reorganized ‘forms of criticism’ and transmedia ‘para-critical practices,’ rather than relying on discourses institutionalized or centralized through traditional methods such as the ‘idea of film criticism,’ ‘film criticism generation,’ and the ‘primacy of print media.’ This paper places importance on the expansion of critic space and the implication of amateurism of the millennial critic generation who was born digital natives and going through cinema critic's institutionalized gatekeeping, in terms of generation. Accordingly, it discusses two new trends in the forms and practices of contemporary Korean film criticism that emerged around the 2010s: talking criticism (cine talk and podcast) and video essay. While keeping in mind the essence of criticism that has been important in historical and traditional critical discourses (aesthetics, evaluation, purification, etc.), we would study the change of roles and functions of the new forms and differentiation of criticism generation, sustainable form of critic and activities related with the transformation of media and reorganization of the media industry in the view of challenges and possibilities.
