한국 근·현대 여성문학의 정전 만들기와 번역 - 새로운 여성문학 선집 발간을 위한 시론 (Canonization of Korean Modern and Contemporary Women’s Literature)

초록

본고는 여성작가들의 선집/전집과 여성문학의 정전화 메커니즘 간의관련성을 규명하고자 한다. 특히 본고는 한국뿐만 아니라 북미권에서 출판된 한국 여성작가들의 선집을 함께 검토함으로써 성과와 한계를 두루검토할 것이다. 또한 새로운 한국 여성문학 선집의 필요성, 내용, 방법론을 제시하려고 한다.
2장에서는 식민지 시기, 해방 후, 그리고 2000년대 이후 각각 발간된선집/전집을 검토하였다. 식민지 시기 선집에서 여성문학을 평가하는 핵심주제는 식민지 조선의 현실이었다. 전후 1960년대에 발간된 한국여류문학전집은 신, 구세대 여성작가들의 작품을 가능한 한 많이 포함시키는 종합의 원칙을 고수함으로써 독자적인 여성문학 장의 확립을 꾀했다 한편 2000년대에 발간된 두 선집은 여성주의적 관점을 견지했지만, 소설장르에 한정되어 있고 작가나 작품에 대한 설명이나 주석이 적은 것이한계이다.
3장에서는 새로운 여성문학 선집의 필요성과 내용, 방법론을 제시하였다. 새로운 여성문학 선집은 시기적으로는 근대 초기부터 2000년대까지를 포괄해야 한다. 또한 여성의 경험과 창조성을 반영하고, 탈식민화의다양한 양상들을 포착하는 것도 중요하다. 또한 새 선집은 소설, 시, 에세이뿐만 아니라 편지, 정치적 저널, 선언문같은 다양한 장르들을 포함시켜야 한다. 궁극적으로 새 선집은 개별 작가와 작품에 대한 미시적 접근과각 시기와 여성 작가들에 대한 거시적 시각을 함께 제시할 필요가 있다.
4장에서는 2000년대 이후 북미권에 번역된 여성작가와 선집을 소개하였다. 이 번역된 작가들과 작품들은 정전으로 인정받았지만 근대 초기와식민지 시기 작품들이 상대적으로 적고, 시와 소설 이외의 장르들은 배제되어 있어 한계가 있다.
결과적으로 새 선집은 여성문학을 둘러싼 사회-문화적 맥락을 탐색해야 하고, 여성성, 여성의 글쓰기, 여성의 욕망과 같은 것들을 다루고 형상화한 작품들을 다루어야 한다. 무엇보다도 여성문학 선집 발간은 문학사에서 잊혀 진 여성작가들을 기억하는 행위라는 점을 인지해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This paper looks into anthologies of female writers and examines the mechanism of canonization in women’s literature. Specifically, this paper examines the current status and the limits of the anthologies of Korean women’s literature published in Korea as well as in the UK and the United States. In addition, I will suggest the contents and methodologies for new Korean women’s literature anthology in relationship with world literature.
The second section reviews the anthologies published in the colonial period,after the liberation of Korea, and since the 2000s. In the colonial period’s anthologies, the key standard for evaluating women’s literature was the reality of colonial Chosun. After Korean War, Korean Women Writer’s Literature Collection contained the works by a wide range of writers of the old and new generations in women’s literary circle, and took the principle of embracement and aggregation. The two anthologies published after the 2000s maintained feminist’s view. But fiction-oriented contents, and very few explanations and comments remained as a limitation.
In the third section, I suggest the need for a new women’s literature anthology. The new Korean women’s literature anthology needs to include works from the early modern period to the contemporary 2000s. Reflecting women’s experiences and creativities, and portraying various aspects of de-colonization are important in new anthology. And the new anthology should include various literary genres like letters, political journals and declarations, including fictions, poems, plays, and essays. Finally, the new anthology has to make a microscopic approach toward individual writers and their works, and offer a macroscopic perspective on each period and women writers in general.
The fourth section introduces selected works or women writers that have been translated since the 2000s. Even though writers and their works recognized as canon in Korean women’s literature have been translated into English, these include only few works from the early modern period and the colonial period. Moreover, it is rare to see works in genres other than fiction and poetry.
In conclusion, the new anthology must survey the socio-cultural conditions surrounding women’s literature, how women’s literature deals with gender issues such as femininity, feminine writing and female desire, and how the femininity or feminine writing has evolved around socio-cultural contexts.
Second, publication of a women’s literature anthology allows readers to remember women writers who have been forgotten in literary history.
