초록

2000년 이후 한국의 임진왜란 연구는 새로운 길을 모색하고 있다. 가장 대표적인 성과는 관군과 의병을 대립적인 존재로 설정하고 관군의 대응 능력을 낮게 보던 관점에 의문을 제기한 것이다. 즉 관군과 의병의 사이의 차이가 크지 않았고, 전쟁 초반 혼란에 빠졌던 행정ㆍ군사 체제도 곧 수습되어 전쟁에 대응할 수 있었다는 견해이다. 임진왜란 전문 연구자가 늘어나면서, 군사제도, 무기와 전술, 영웅사관에서 벗어난 인물연구, 정유재란, 사회사ㆍ경제사 등, 연구 주제가 전문화되는 양상이 보이고 있다는 것도 2000년 이후 연구의 특징이다.
임진왜란은 조선과 명이 일본과 싸운 전쟁이다. 또한 현대 한국, 중국, 일본 세 나라 공통의 역사이므로 전쟁의 국제성에 대한 관심이 높았다. 현재는 전쟁 중 전개된 강화교섭, 책봉체제, 지정학적 관점에서의 분석이 각광을 받고 있다. 반면 세 나라 연구자의 학술 교류는 최근 뜸해진 상태이다. 그러나 서로의 자료에 대해 관심과 이해도가 높아진 상황이기에 곧 활발한 교류가 이루어질 것으로 기대된다.
연구 주제의 다양화, 전쟁의 국제적 성격에 대한 흥미는 자료에 대한 관심과 연동된다. 2000년대 이래 사료의 전자 데이터베이스화가 급격히 이루어지면서 누구나 쉽게 사료에 접근할 수 있는 기회가 마련되었다. 그뿐만 아니라 현재 외교문서, 일기 자료의 번역 출간도 활발히 이루어지고 있으며, 이는 관련 연구의 증가로 이어지고 있다.
임진왜란의 성격을 파악하려면 전쟁의 원인부터 이야기할 수 있어야 한다. 과거 한국에서는 일본의 연구 성과에 기대는 경우가 적지 않았다. 최근 과거 한국 학계가 무비판적으로 인용했던 원인론에 대한 비판적 재인식 함께, 구체적 자료에 근거하여 전쟁의 원인을 다시 고민하자는 요청이 제기되고 있다. 자료에 대한 폭넓은 관심과 접근, 전형적 서사에 대한 비판적 재인식, 학문 분야와 국경을 넘나드는 활발한 교류는 한국의 임진왜란 연구가 다음 단계로 나아갈 수 있게 할 것이다.

영어초록

Since the 2000s, research on the First Japanese Invasion of Korea has taken new directions. One of the most significant achievements has been challenging the perspective that considered the government army and volunteer army(righteous army) as opposing entities, with a perception that government army's capabilities are lower. In other words, the view emerged that the differences between the government and volunteer armies were not so substantial and that the administrative and military systems, which initially fell into disarray at the beginning of the war, soon recovered to respond to the conflict. Another characteristic of post-2000 research is that, with the increasing number of researchers focusing on the Imjin War, there is a trend toward greater specialization in research topics, including the military system, weapons and tactics, studies of figures beyond the Great Man theory, the Second Japanese Invasion of Korea, social history, and economic history.
The Imjin war was a conflict between Joseon and Ming against Japan. Since this history is shared among modern Korea, China, and Japan, there has been heightened interest in the international nature of the war. Presently, analyses of the peace negotiations during the war, the tributary system, and geopolitical perspectives have gained attention. While academic exchanges among researchers from these three countries have recently decreased, heightened interest and understanding regarding each other's historical materials are expected to lead to active collaboration soon.
The diversification of research topics and interest in the international nature of the war is closely tied to the interest in historical materials. Since the 2000s, the digitization of documents has provided everyone with easy access to source materials. Furthermore, the active translation and publication of diplomatic documents and diaries have contributed to the growth of related research.
To comprehend the nature of the Imjin war, one must start by exploring its causes. In the past, Korean researchers often relied on Japanese research. However, with recent critical reevaluations of causation theories previously cited uncritically by Korean academics, there have been calls to rethink these theories based on concrete evidence. Broader interest in and access to materials, a critical reassessment of typical narratives, and vibrant interdisciplinary and cross-border exchanges will propel Korean research on the Imjin war to the next level.
