New Emotional Labor Proposal for Flight Attendants : Impression Labor as Reciprocity

The global pandemic is rapidly shifting the concept of work in modern society.
Among the many jobs whose employment conditions and job conditions have changed due to the pandemic, the flight attendant job has faced the worst of the border closures and movement restrictions. As for the job of flight attendants, Hochschild defined the essential concept of labor, human resources and human activities that are put in to make goods in the process of economic activity, then discovered emotional labor in the vocational training process of flight attendants at Delta Air Lines. He insisted on managing one's emotions by managing one's appearance and expression, suppressing one's real emotions, or expressing emotions that are different from one's real emotions and required by the organization (Hochschild, 1983).
In Korea, many academic efforts have been made on emotional labor for the past 40 years. The subject of many preceding studies on emotional labor has been focused on treatment, prescription, and prevention of negative jobs. For example, because it causes negative job attitudes such as deterioration in mental health of service workers, loss of labor power, increase in turnover rate, decrease in productivity, and increase in social costs necessary for prevention, the focus is on the aspect of worker protection. However, criticism has been raised that the negative aspects of emotional work are unaware of the existence of positive emotions that arise in the process of carrying out their tasks. Due to the spread, the limitations of emotional labor cannot but be pointed out due to the need for Self Objection Theory (SOT) about one's own appearance reflected by others in relation to the impression at the workplace. The purpose of this study is the necessity of raising a new form of labor through a critical examination of emotional labor. First, the positive effects of emotional labor, second, theoretical criticism through the existence of emotional labor in the past, and third, an alternative to emotional labor. I want to present self-awareness as a person.
In order to prove this, we conducted a critical examination of the emotional labor of Maybe Hochschild through symbolic reciprocity theory, Affective Event Theory (AET), Self Objection Theory, and Impression Theory.
I would like to propose impressionable work as a new concept. This study seeks to find a new sense of job presence through the harmony of work and emotions for individuals in the process of exploring human labor from a sociological point of view, beyond the level of individual emotions that occur in the workplace rather than the essential problems of human labor activities. Furthermore, it was decided to look for ways to respect individual feelings on different levels for workplace managers.
