교정용 성격평가질문지(PAI-PS) 표준화 연구 (Standardization Study of the Personality Assessment Inventory for Prison Setting(PAI-PS))

초록

이 연구는 다양한 장면에서 유용성이 입증된 성격평가질문지(PAI)를 국내 교정현장에서 보다 효과적으로 적용할 수 있도록 표준화하고자 하였다. 우리나라 수형자들의특성을 대표할 수 있는 표본을 구성하기 위해 전체 수형자의 범죄유형별 구성비를 반영하여 5개 지역의 교도소에서 대규모 수형자 자료를 표집하였다. 표집된 자료(N=859)를 이용하여 교정용 특수규준을 설정하고(PAI-PS), 이에 대한 신뢰도과 타당성을 검토하였다. 신뢰도 검증을 위해 PAI-PS 표본의 내적합치도와 문항간 상관 평균을 산출한 결과, PAI-PS의 신뢰도가 적절한 수준이며 PAI 증보판과 유사한 결과가나타났다. PAI-PS의 타당성을 검토하기 위해 PAI-PS 표본과 PAI 표준화 표본의 PAI 평균 프로파일을 비교하여 두 표본 간 유의한 차이를 확인하였다. 그 결과, 두 표본간 차이는 선행연구에서 지적하고 있는 수형자의 심리적 특성을 잘 반영하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 특히 PAI 척도 및 하위척도를 5개의 임상문제 영역으로 구분하여 살펴봤을 때 행동장애척도군에서 PAI-PS 표본과 PAI 표준화 표본의 차이가 두드러졌다. 반사회적 행동(ANT-A) 하위척도와 약물문제(DRG) 척도에서 두 표본 간 평균 차이의 효과가 크게 나타났으며 반사회적 특징(ANT) 척도와 알코올문제(ALC) 척도에서는 두 표본 간 평균 차이의 효과가 중간 정도로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 수형자와일반성인간 심리적 특성의 핵심적인 차이를 밝힌 선행연구 결과들과 일치하며, PAI-PS의 타당성을 지지하는 결과로 해석된다. 결론적으로, PAI-PS는 우리나라 교정수형자들의 심리적 문제와 성격 특성을 신뢰롭고 타당하게 평가할 수 있는 도구로 시사된다. 교정현장에서 신뢰도와 타당성이 입증된 PAI-PS를 적용함으로써 보다 효율적이고 체계적인 수형자 분류 및 개별처우에 도움이 될 것을 기대한다.

영어초록

This study aimed to standardize the Personality Assessment Inventory(PAI), which had proven usefulness in various settings, to be applied more effectively in correctional field. In order to consist a sample that can represent the characteristics of correctional institution inmates, large-scale inmates data were collected in prisons located in five regions reflecting the composition ratio of criminal types of all prisoners. 859 of the collected samples called the PAI-PS sample were used for analysis. To examine the reliability of the PAI-PS, internal consistency and mean interitem correlation of the PAI-PS samples were calculated. Results was indicated the reliability of the PAI-PS were adequate.
They were consistent with the PAI-enlarged edition, which had standardized to Korean adult normative sample. In order to examine the validity of the PAI-PS, the PAI mean profiles of the PAI-PS Sample and the PAI standardization sample were compared. As a result, it was confirmed that significant differences between two samples well reflected the psychological characteristics of the prisoners pointed out in the previous studies. In particular, when the PAI scales and the subscales were divided into five clinical problem areas, the differences between the PAI-PS sample and the PAI standardized sample were noticeable in the behavioral disorder scale cluster. Antisocial Behaviors(ANT-A) subscale and Drug Problems(DRG) scale demonstrated large effect size, with higher mean scores for the PAI-PS sample than the PAI standardization sample. Medium magnitude differences were observed on the Antisocial Features(ANT) and the Alcohol Problems(ALC) scales, with the PAI-PS sample again exhibiting higher mean scores. These results were consistent with the findings of previous studies that identified core differences in the psychological characteristics between the prisoners and the general public, and can be interpreted as results of supporting the validity of the PAI-PS. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that the PAI-PS is the reliable and valid instrument that evaluating psychological characteristics and problems of prisoners in Korea. It is expected that the application of the PAI-PS, which has proven reliability and validity in the correctional setting, help more efficient and systematical classification and determining individual treatment for prisoners.
