초등학교 교육용 악기와 가야금 (The instruments for music education in the elementary school and the Gayageum)

초록

우리 나라의 대표적인 현악기인 가야금은 누구나 쉽게 소리를 낼 수 있고 여타 국악기에 비해 연주법이 단순하기 때문에 초등학교에서 활용될 가능성이 높은 악기이다. 그러나 악기의 큰 덩치와 비싼 가격, 줄 관리의 어려움과 실질적인 지도방법의 부족 등의 이유로 초등학교 현장에서 널리 활용되지 못하여 아쉬움이 있었다. 이런 점에서 가야금을 초등교육현장에 효과적으로 적용시킬 수 있는 구체적이고 본격적인 연구의 필요성이 제기되었다.
본 연구는 초등학교에서의 교육용 악기 지도 현황을 살펴보고, 그를 바탕으로 가야금이 초등학교 교육용 악기로서 적절한지 여부를 점검해보았으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다.
먼저 음악과 교육과정에서는 악기 연주하기에 타악기와 가락악기를 활용한다고 적시하고, 국악기 4종과 서양 악기 7종 등 총 11종을 범례로 제시하고 있었다. 이 11종의 악기 중 장구, 소고, 트라이앵글, 탬버린, 캐스터네츠, 북 등 6종의 악기는 타악기이고, 단소, 소금, 기타, 건반 악기, 리코더 등 6종은 가락악기로 구분하는데, 이 6종의 가락악기는 연주방법에 따라 관악기와 현악기, 건반악기의 3가지 악기군으로 다시 세분할 수 있었다. 이를 바탕으로 연구자는 서양악기에 비해 상대적으로 취약한 현악기와 건반악기에 해당하는 국악기를 적극적으로 발굴하여 활용할 필요성을 제기하였으며, 그 대상 악기로 가야금을 최우선으로 선택하였다.
가야금은 초등학교 4학년에서 단 한 차례 가야금 병창의 형태로 처음 등장하며, 5학년과 6학년에서 교과서마다 2회 내외로 나타난다. 제시된 가야금은 여러 가지 악기를 소개하는 단원에서 단순히 소개하거나, 악곡을 설명하는 과정에서 가야금병창이나 가야금산조 등 가야금과 관련된 악곡소개에 간접적으로 그리고 제한적으로 노출되고 있는 것으로 파악하였다.
연구자는 초등교육용 국악기로서의 조건으로 쉬운 연주, 좋은 음색, 경제성, 작은 크기, 소음량, 흥미, 다양한 활용, 내구성, 좋은 촉감의 재질 등의 9가지를 제시하였으며, 그에 따라 가야금이 초등교육용 악기로서의 이 9가지 조건을 얼마나 충족시킬 수 있는지에 대한 검토를 시도하였다. 그 결과 가야금은 9가지 조건 중 쉬운 연주, 좋은 음색, 소음량, 흥미, 다양한 활용, 내구성, 좋은 촉감의 재질 등의 7가지 요소를 충족하고 있으며, 경제성과 작은 크기 등의 문제점도 충분히 개선할 수 있을 것으로 판단하였다. 특히 가야금은 가창과 기악, 창작 등 국악의 모든 영역에서 중요한 요소인 여러 가지 시김새를 설명하고 지도하기에 가장 적합한 악기로 논의하였고, 향후 초등교육용 국악기의 대표악기로 예상하였다.
요컨대 가야금은 교육용 국악기로서의 다양한 목적을 달성할 수 있는 악기로 판단되며, 크기와 경제성 등의 단점을 보완할 수 있는 악기 개선이 이루어진다면 그 활용 범위는 더욱 확대될 것으로 예상된다.

영어초록

A Gayageum is a main traditional instrument of Korea that has a high possibility of using in elementary school to teach children korean traditional music because of its simple technique and any child can make a sound easily. However, as its huge size, expensive price, difficulty for managing strings, and lack of effective teaching method, the instrument was not able to be used widely as the educational practice in the elementary school.
By these points, this study looked over the present circumstance of the teaching of instrument for music in the elementary school focusing on the music textbook, and examined whether the instrument is appropriate for the educational practice in the elementary school or not.
Firstly, it is suggested that utilizing percussion and melodic instrument in the part of playing musical instrument. Secondly, it is suggested to use 4 sorts of traditional instruments and 7 kinds of western instruments (total 11 types) as representative instruments in the music curriculum. 5 out of 11 types are percussions; janggu, tabor, triangle, castanets, and drum. Moreover, 6 out of 11 are melodic instruments; danso, sogeum, keyboard instrument and recorder. These 6 sorts of melodic instruments are divided into 3 parts such as wind instrument, string instrument and keyboard instrument by using a way of performance.
This study suggests the need of application by discovering a traditional instrument which serves as the string instrument and the keyboard instrument of western instruments. I think that the traditional instrument should be 'gayageum' as the best choice.
The gayageum appears in the 4th grade of the elementary school only once as a form of gayageum byeongchang, music by gayageum with songs, and in the 5th and the 6th grade, it appears about twice in each text book. A Gayageum is simply introduced in a book as a shape of introduction of a variety of instruments or a shape of a musical piece related with gayageum byeongchang or gayageum sanjo indirectly and restrictedly during the process of explanation of music.
The study suggests 9 conditions for the instruments for korean traditional music education ; easy performance, good tunes, economics, small size of the instrument, moderate sounds, stimulate of an interest in, a variety of applications, durability and the superior touch of material. According to these, this study reviews and attempts how the gayageum fulfill the 9 conditions as the instrument for music education in elementary school.
In consequence, 7 out of 9 are satisfied with it; easy performance, good tunes, moderate sounds, stimulate of an interest in, a variety of applications, durability, and the superior touch of material. Therefore, the rest of them has enough possibility for improving and to solve their problems.
This study expects the gayageum can utilize korean music scale, sigimsae, ornament tune, and playing easy music activity by using the present condition of gayageum shortly, and in long term, develop the instrument, such as training music education of the improvement gayageum that prepares for small size and economics in real gayageum performance activity.
In sum, the gayageum expects to be achievable instrument for various objectives as instruction of traditional music instrument. Moreover, if the instrument develops and complement the problem of its huge size and expensive price, the sphere of activity will be expanded.
