渤海와 契丹(遼) 관계사의 연구현황과 과제 (Research current state and tasks related to the relationship between Balhae and Khitan)

초록

이 글에서는 渤海와 契丹(遼)의 관계에 대한 주요 연구성과를 살펴보았다. 먼저 7세기 후반 발해와 거란의 관계에 대해 중국은 乞乞仲象의 ‘舍利’라는 관직을 통해 大祚榮集團이 거란에 종속된 것으로 보는 반면, 한국에서는 ‘舍利’를 당시 營州에 雜居하던 한 민족의 지도자를 말하는 관직으로 이해하고 있다. 이외에 ‘舍利’를 고구려의 관직으로 볼 가능성도 있다는 주장이 제기되기도 했다.
8~9세기 발해와 거란의 관계는 거란(요) 耶律阿保機가 언급한 ‘世讎’ 관계를 중심으로 연구가 이루어졌다. 이러한 ‘世讎’ 관계는 발해건국 초기부터 ‘世讎’ 관계였다는 견해, 8세기 발해 文王 때 당과의 교류가 활성화되면서 ‘世讎’가 형성되었다는 견해, ‘世讎’는 야율아보기가 발해침공의 명분으로 말한 것이라는 견해 등이 제기되었다.
10세기 전반 발해와 거란(요)의 관계는 발해의 멸망을 중심으로 연구가 이루어졌다. 발해멸망은 내분설과 외인설로 구분할 수 있고, 최근에는 『陳萬墓誌』를 통해 925년 거란이 발해 鴨綠府를 공격했다는 것과 더불어 거란이 발해 鐵利府와 東平府도 공격해 이곳을 전략적 요충지로 삼았다는 주장이 제기되었다.
遼代 발해유민과 거란(요)의 관계는 거란(요)에서 벼슬한 발해인과 관련한 연구가 주로 이루어졌다. 이외에 거란(요) 斡魯朶 소속 州․縣에 예속된 발해인을 살펴보거나, 발해멸망 후 거란(요)으로 遷徙된 발해인의 거주지를 검토한 연구가 있으며, 또한 東丹國의 통치구조 등을 살펴보는 연구도 이루어졌다.
그렇다면 향후 발해와 거란(요) 관계는 어떻게 바라보아야 할까? 첫째, 8~10세기 전반에는 발해와 거란의 관계를 동아시아의 국제정세 속에서 살펴보아야 할 것이다. 둘째, 10세기 전반에는 거란의 발해 扶餘城, 上京 공격이 이루어진 것이 926년 1월이라는 『遼史』의 기록이 타당한지를 다시 한번 재검토하고, ‘天顯’이란 연호로의 개원이 이루어진 시기가 정확히 언제였는지 밝혀봐야 할 것이다. 셋째, 10~12세기 전반 발해멸망 후 거란(요)으로 끌려간 발해인들의 생활 형태와 거란(요)의 발해인에 대한 지배방식을 살펴봐야할 것이다. 넷째, 거란(요)이 건립한 동단국의 발해인에 대한 지배방식과 동단국 발해인들의 생활 형태를 살펴봐야 할 것이다.

영어초록

In this article, the main research results on the relationship between Balhae and the Khitan were examined. First of all, in relation to the relationship between Balhae and the Khitan in the late 7th century, China viewed the Dae-joyoung group as subordinate to the Khitan through 'Sari(舍利)'. On the other hand, in Korea, 'Sari' is understood to refer to the leaders of people who lived in Yeong-ju(營州) at the time. In addition to, it was argued that there was a possibility that 'Sari' could be viewed as a Goguryeo government post.
The relationship between Balhae and the Khitan in the 8th and 9th centuries was studied centering on the relationship between the ‘enemies of generations(世讎)’ mentioned by Khitan Yayul-abogi. There are views that this relationship was formed from the beginning of Balhae's founding, that it occurred when exchanges with the Tang Dynasty were activated in the 8th century, and that the Yayul-abogi put it forward as a justification for Balhae's invasion.
The relationship between Balhae and the Khitan in the first half of the 10th century was studied centering on the fall of Balhae. In particular, through the analysis of the cemetery gate, a view was recently raised that the Khitan army attacked Amnok prefecture in 925, and in addition, attacked Cheolli prefecture and Dongpyeong prefecture, making it a strategic point.
The relationship between Balhae displaced and Khitan was mainly studied in relation to Balhae residents who held government posts in Khitan. In addition, we are looking at Balhae residents who belong to Khitan Allota(斡魯朶). There is also a study examining the residence of Balhae residents who moved to the Khitan after Balhae's destruction. In addition, a study was conducted to examine the governance structure of Dongdan nation(東丹國).
Then, how should we look at the relationship between Balhae and the Khitan in the future? First, in the first half of the 8th and 10th centuries, the relationship between Balhae and the Khitan should be examined in the international situation of East Asia. Second, it is necessary to reconsider whether the record of the 『History of Liao』 that the attack on the Khitan's Ministry of Buyeo prefecture and Capital in the first half of the 10th century was valid in January 926. In addition, it should be revealed exactly when the opening of the era name "Cheon-hyeon(天顯)" took place. Third, it is necessary to look at the lifestyle of the residents of Balhae, who were taken to the Khitan after the destruction of Balhae in the first half of the 10th and 12th centuries, and how the Khitan governs them. Fourth, it is necessary to examine the way of control over the residents of Balhae in the Dongdan nation established by the Khitan and the lifestyle of the residents of Balhae in the Dongdan nation.
