포스트페미니즘 드라마의 서사와 정치적 함의 ―TV드라마 <검색어를 입력하세요 WWW>를 중심으로- (Narrative of Post Feminist Drama Series and its Political Implications ―Focused on the TV Drama Geomsaekeureul ibryeokhaseyo WWW(Serch WWW))

초록

포스트페미니즘과 미디어 연구는 ‘불평등’에 주목했던 2세대 페미니즘과 달리 신자유주의 질서 속에 살아가는 여성들의 자아실현과 성취 욕망, 성적 주체로서의 섹슈얼리티, 소비 주체로서의 즐거움과 저항에 주목하며 미디어가 어떻게 새로운 여성 주체를 호명하는지에 관심을 갖는다. 이런 관점에서 본 연구는 대형 인터넷 포털의 임원인 30대 여성들의 직업적 성취와 우정, 사랑을 그린 tvN 드라마 <검색어를 입력하세요 WWW>를 포스트페미니즘 드라마로 명명하였다. 그리고 서사 분석을 통해 이 드라마가 어떤 방식으로 달라진 여성 주체를 호명하며, 무엇을 배제하는지를 밝힘으로써 이들 포스트페미니즘 서사가 보여주는 정치적 함의를 논의하고자 하였다. 분석 결과 이 드라마는 30대 후반에 공적 영역에서 성공한 여성들이 전문성을 가지고 활약하면서 정부와 기업의 압력을 막아내는 모습을 통해 주변부에 머물러 왔던 여성들을 사회적 성취 욕망과 합리성을 가진 주체로서 호명하였다. 또한 직장과 학교의 선후배 사이인 세 명의 여성이 같은 업계에서 치열하게 경쟁하면서도, 끈끈한 정서적 유대와 연대를 통해 불의에 맞서는 서사로 페미니즘이 주창하는 ‘자매애’적 여성 연대의 가능성을 보여 주었다.그리고 여성보다 사회경제적 지위가 낮은 탈권위적인 연하남과의 관계를 설정, 가부장제의 연령주의를 파괴하고 여성주도적인 남녀관계와 여성의 섹슈얼리티를 적극적으로 재현하였다. 또한 정략결혼을 한 여성의 자발적 이혼과 독립선언으로 ‘낭만적 사랑과 결합’이라는 기존의 담론을 전복하였다. 반면 이 드라마는 여성을 억압해 왔던 가족주의와 가부장적 권위를 가진 남성을 배제하는 서사전략을 사용하였다. 이러한 포스트 페미니즘 서사는 그동안 페미니즘 진영의 비판을 받아온 ‘신데델라 서사’에 대한 ‘미러링(mirroring)’으로, 미투 운동 이후 우리 사회의 변화된 여성 담론 지형에 조응하는 것이다. 그러나 사회적 성공과 경제력을 갖춘 소수 여성들의 공적 영역에서의 활약, 여성 주도적인 남녀관계와 섹슈얼리티 재현은 여전히 남성보다 낮은 저임금과 비정규직이라는 지위로 고통 받는 대다수 여성들이 겪는 현실의 문제와 차별을 은폐한다는 점에서 문제가 있다. 또한 페미니즘의 이슈가 모두 해결된 듯한 사회적 ‘착시현상’을 불러온다는 점에서도 한계가 있다.

영어초록

Unlike the second wave feminism which focused on “inequality”, post-feminism and media studies centers on women’s self-realization, ambitions for success, sexuality as a sexual being, and enjoyment and resistance as a consumer, women who live in in a neoliberal society and focuses on how the media portrays the new female subject. From this perspective, this study has categorized the tvN drama series Geomsaekeureul ibryeokhaseyo WWW which follows the professional lives, friendships, and romantic relationships of thirty-something female senior executives at large internet companies, as a post-feminist drama series. This study employed narrative analysis to identify how this drama series describes and excludes the new female being, and discusses the political implications from this post-feminist narrative. The analysis shows this drama illustrates women, who previously were cast to the periphery, as rational, socially ambitious beings, through the strong female characters of thirty-something year old executives at large internet companies who have already achieved professional success and does not bend to pressure from government. In addition, the three main characters who are colleagues and school friends, compete fiercely in their professional lives, but at critical times lend help to each other. This shows a strong emotional connection, and hints at the possibility of a “sisterhood” as touted by feminists. The drama also deviates from the traditional patriarchal ageism in romantic relationships through a storyline involving a relationship with a non-authoritarian younger man with a lower socio-economic status, and illustrates the woman taking the lead in the relationship with an assertive stance on sexuality. Another break from the age-old narrative of ‘romantic love and coupling’ is the woman who had entered into a marriage of convenience announcing her divorce and independence. This series completely excludes family centric storylines and narratives on patriarchal authority which has long oppressed women. This post-feminist narrative is the complete reversal of the “Cinderella story” which has been widely criticized by feminists, and conforms to the changes in feminist discourse following the MeToo movement. However, the problem lies in the fact that by focusing on the small minority of women who are already successful professionally and financially independent who enjoys professional success and are assertive sexually and takes the lead in romantic relationship, it veils the problematic reality that the majority of women are suffering due to less pay versus male peers and trapped in non-permanent contractual jobs. There are also limitations in that such portrayals cause an “optical illusion” that these problems in society have been resolved.
