랭보시의 ‘침묵의 번역’에 대한 번역 문제: 「영원」 L'Eternité의 예 (Problems of Translation of ‘translation of silence’: example of L'Eternité)

초록

본고는 랭보시를 번역할 때 제기되는 근본적인 문제점을 검토하였
다. 시 번역은 일반적으로 ‘번역=해석’, 또는 ‘번역=비평’에 기초한다.
이 ‘번역=해석’의 관점에서 랭보시 번역의 문제를 다루기 위해 우리는
비교적 유명한 「영원」의 1872년 버전을 예로 들었다. 「영원」은 일반적
으로 알려진 것처럼 이해하기 쉬운 시가 아니라 1873년 시인이 언어
의 연금술」Alchimie du verbe에서 예고한 ‘침묵의 번역’이라는 시 창
작 원리를 예시하는 시로 침묵을 번역한 대표적인 시라 할 수 있다. 따
라서 원시가 번역하고자 하는 원천 내용인 침묵을 해석하지 않고 번역
할 경우 번역은 완전히 엉뚱하게 흘러갈 수 있다.
이에 본고는 크게 2장으로 나누어 먼저 1장에서 랭보의 시 창작원리
로서 침묵의 시학을 살펴보았다. 우리가 보기에는 랭보의 침묵은 ‘투시
자’인 他者(autre)가 시의 지평에서 맞이한 죽음이다. 즉 이는 ‘타자의
지평=죽음=침묵’이 되어 시인이 자신의 시에서 표현하지 않은 채 시의
언어와 이미지에 있어서 가장 먼 방식으로 암시하는 부분이 된다. 2장
에서 우리는 「영원」의 번역들을 비교하면서 랭보시 번역의 문제를 구
체적으로 살펴보았다. 우리의 ‘번역=해석’에 따르면 「영원」은 바로 이
‘타자=죽음=침묵’의 고리를 직역한 것이다. 이처럼 랭보의 ‘침묵의 번
역’은 랭보시의 창작원리로 랭보시가 난해한 가장 큰 이유가 된다. 침묵은 벤야민이 말하는 순수언어에 속하며 랭보시의 번역가능성은 단순
히 축자적 번역이나 자의적 해석에 입각한 번역이 아니라 이 원천내용
인 순수언어의 번역에 있다. 이때 ‘번역의 번역’은 원시가 드러내지 않
는 의미를 드러낸다. 따라서 원시가 직역하고자 하는 침묵인 순수언어
를 번역하는 것이 랭보시 번역의 가능성이라 할 수 있다. 그럼에도, 번
역자의 한계는 늘 존재하며 이로 인한 순수언어의 번역에서 미진한 부
분은 주해에 할당할 필요가 있다. 랭보시 번역에서 주해는 단순히 독자
를 위한 설명이나 번역자의 변명이 아니라 번역의 일부분으로서 미래
의 번역에 내맡기는 번역의 지평이 된다. 이런 점에서 랭보시 번역은
단순한 ‘번역=해석’을 넘어 ‘번역=탐구’라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

In this article we examine the essential problem brought up when
translating Rimbaud's poetry. In general, the translation of poetry is
based on ‘translation = interpretation’, or ‘translation = criticism’ or
‘translation = research’. In order to handle the translation of
Rimbaud's poetry, we chose a relatively famous poem of Rimbaud,
the 1872 version of L'Eternité. L'Eternité has been generally known
as an easy poem, but it is actually difficult to understand. The
Alchimie du verbe of 1873 previously mentions ‘the translation of
silence’ illustrating the principles of the poetic creation. L'Eternité
can be considered the representative poem translating ‘poetic
silence’. Therefore, the translation can become absurd if the source
of content translating what the silence refers to is not interpreted
first.
In our article largely divided into two chapters, in the first part
we deal with the creative principle of Rimbaud considered as the
Poetics of silence. We see in the silence of Rimbaud the death of
autre dying on the horizon of poetry. This means that ‘horizon of
autre = death = silence’ represents one of the most suggestive parts
so unrelated in their usage of language and images. In the second
part, comparing L'Eternité with its translations, we specially look at
the problem of the translation. According to our point of ‘translation
= interpretation’ L'Eternité is the poem directly translating the type
of connection in ‘autre = death = silence’. Rimbaud's translation of
silence is a principal reason of the esoteric difficulty. The silence is
the pure language mentioned by Benjamin ; the possibility of
translation of Rimbaud depends on simply the translation of this
silence, poetic source of content, not on the passive translation of
word for word, nor translation based on arbitrary interpretation. At
this point, ‘the translation of the translation’, reveals the obscuremeaning of the original text. Thus, the possibility of the translation
of Rimbaud consists in translation of the pure language that
constitutes the poetic silence. Nevertheless, due to the limitations of
the translator, the translation of this pure language encounters
difficulty. These limitations of translation need to be referred to the
notes. In the case of the translation of Rimbaud, the note is not an
explanation for readers ; the translation is not simply an excuse for
the translator's incapacity but is a horizon of translation awaiting
future translation, while we must consider it now a part of the
translation. In this context, translating Rimbaud is ‘translation =
research’ rather than simply ‘translation = interpretation’.
