마주신 사례를 통해서 본 타이완 민속종교경관의 영적 치유로서의 의미 (The Meaning of Folk Religious Landscapes in Taiwan As Spiritual Healing Through a Case Study of the Goddess of Mazu)

초록

비록 마주신앙은 중국의 송나라 때부터 신격화된 여성을 모티브로 한 도교, 불교, 유교, 애니미즘 등을 아우르는 민속종교이지만, 영험함, (피보다 진한) 인간관계, (평화적) 하나됨 등을 통해 타이완인의 삶과 정서를 어루만져주는 영적 치유의 힘을 갖고 있는 타이완의 대표적 종교이기도 하다. 이에 본 연구는 마주신 사례를 통해 타이완 민속종교경관의 영적 치유로서의 의미가 어떻게 구체화되어 나타나는지 알아보는 것에 목적을 두고 있으며, 이를 위해 참여관찰법과 심층 및 반구조화인터뷰를 통해 연구결과를 도출하였다. 그 내용을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 마주신앙의 영적 치유의 의미는 마주신과의 직간접적인 영험한 대화와 체험을 통해 드러난다. 다시 말해, 단순한 기도 수준을 뛰어넘어 일종의 점을 치는 행위, 신비스런 힘이 있다고 믿는 자연물(특히, 물)을 활용한 방법, 특히 지통(乩童: Jitong)이라 불리는 샤먼과 믿는 이들 사이에서의 특별한 대화와 의식 등으로 구체화된다. 둘째, 서로 일면식이 없는 사이라 하더라도 ‘의(義)’를 중시하는 마주신의 뜻을 따라 믿음을 같이 하는 이들은 ‘의자(義子)’와 ‘의녀(義女)’로서 피보다 진한 연결망(혹은 인간관계)을 구축하고 있으며, 서로를 끈끈하게 지지하고, 협력하는 양상을 보인다. 각 마주사원은 마치 농촌의 공동체에서 발견할 수 있는 것과 같은 돌봄과 관심을 제공하고 있으며, 이러한 공동체의식과 연대의식은 마주신 순례 기간에는 더 넓은 범위로 확대되기도 한다. 마지막으로 비록 마주신앙의 순수성이 정치, 경제 등의 종교 외적인 것과 영향을 주고받으며, 때로는 변질되기도 하지만, 극도로 민감한 양안관계를 단숨에 녹이는 힘으로 발휘되기도 한다. 마주신을 중심으로 타이완과 중국 본토 신앙인들의 공존과 단합은 정치적 이데올로기를 넘어선 궁극적인 평화에 도달하기 위한 방향을 제시하고 있으며, 이런 의미에서 마주신이 ‘바다의 여신’이라는 이름 대신 ‘평화의 여신’으로 간주되기도 한다.

영어초록

Even though the Goddess of Mazu as one of the folk religions, which includes Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Animism, has been originated from a deified woman since the Song Dynasty, China, it is a representative religion in Taiwan, which has the power of spiritual healing, and encourages a lot of Taiwanese’ life and emotion through supernatural powers, human relationships based on ‘thicker than blood’, and peaceful oneness. With this in mind, the goal of this research examines the matter as to how the meaning of folk religious landscapes as spiritual healing in Taiwan is materialized through a case study of the Goddess of Mazu; furthermore, this research arrives at considerable results through participant observation and indepth/substructured interview. The results are as in the following. First, the meaning of spiritual healing in the belief of Mazu is materialized by direct/indirect supernatural communication and experiences with the Goddess of Mazu beyond general prayers. In other words, it embodies in telling fortunes, utilizing natural objects, which have miracle powers (in articular, water), and communicating and performing a holy ceremony between Jitong as a shaman and believers. Second, even though the believers of Mazu have never met before, they as the ‘sons/daughters of justice’ have strong human networks (or human relationships) based on thicker than blood obeying the will of the Goddess of Mazu who puts emphasis on the justice. Also, they show the supportive and cooperative appearance each other adhesively. Furthermore, each Mazu temple provides caring and interests like the emotion in rural areas to the believers of Mazu; such community spirit and solidarity are expanded to a wider level much more during the pilgrimage seasons. Lastly, even though the purity of the Mazu belief influences on/is influenced by external conditions such as politics and economics and is occasionally faded in its meaning, the Goddess of Mazu exposes the power that melts the Cross-Strait Relations as the strained/uneasy relationships. The coexistence and cooperation of the believers between China and Taiwan are related to the direction, which arrives at the ultimate peace, beyond the political ideology. In this sense, the Goddess of Mazu is regarded as the Goddess of Peace instead of the Goddess of Sea.
