영어영문학 전공생을 위한 학문목적영어 독해강좌의 개발: 어학영역을 중심으로 (A Development of an ESAP Reading Course in Linguistics for Undergraduate English Majors.)

초록

The purpose of the study is to develop and implement an academic English reading course tailored for the undergraduate students majoring in English Linguistics. Designed under the framework of the English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP), the course aims to bridge the gap between the General English program and the English-medium subject-matter courses in the area of English linguistics. The study reports on several phases of course development: 1) the results of needs analyses of the students'difficulties and strategies in reading English texts used in their subject-matter courses; 2)the initial design of a theme-based EAP reading course developed by the researcher in collaboration with other faculty members via a series of department-wise conferences; 3)the students' post-course evaluation inquiring about the usefulness of the reading materials and in-class activities; and 4) the subsequent revisions of the course components. Coupled with a focus-group interview with 8 students, two sets of survey questionnaires were completed by 99 students of the linguistics major who were taking two parallel EAP reading courses being piloted at the time of study. The results advocate the importance of collaboration among the faculty members in the development and implementation process of an ESAP course under the curriculum of a specific major in addition to the necessity of attention being paid to the on-going needs of the target students.
