<우렁각시>에 나타난 엿보기의 의미와 이야기 전개와의 관련 양상 (The narrative development of the story Wooreong Gaksi (Snail Bride))

초록

<우렁각시>는 우렁으로 둔갑한 여인을 의미한다. 이 여인은 단순한 우렁이 아니라, 천상에서 귀양을 온 선녀로서 자신을 구해 집으로 데리고 온 총각을 위 해서 밥을 차려주다가 들키게 된다. 그때 우렁각시는 금기를 제시하면서 며칠 만 참으면 우리가 부부가 될 수 있으니 그때까지 참아달라고 한다. 총각은 우렁 이 둔갑하는 모습을 보았지만, 참지 못하고 그냥 부부가 되어 살게 된다. 총각과 우렁각시의 관계에서 흥미로운 것은 우렁각시가 인간이 아니라는 점, 그리고 총각이 금기를 위반했는데도 불구하고 행복하게 살게 된다는 점이 다. 물론 이야기가 확장되어 우렁각시를 원님에게 빼앗기는 경우와 같이 금기의 위반에 따른 불행이 나타나는 경우도 있다. 그러나 결국에는 이 고난도 극복 하고 행복하게 살게 된다는 것이 이 이야기의 서사구조이다. 우리나라에서 전승되는 설화의 특징 가운데 하나는 이야기에서 금기가 제시 되고 이를 위반했을 경우 결말이 불행하게 마무리된다는 것이다. 그런데 <우렁 각시>는 그와는 다른, 예외적인 면모를 보여준다는 점에서 특징적이다. 예컨대 <나무꾼과 선녀>의 경우도 금기를 위반하여 불행을 초래하며, 작제건과 저민 의의 관계에서도 작제건이 금기를 위반하는 행위가 부부의 이별이라는 불행한 결과로 이어진다. 이러한 일관된 설화적 특징에도 불구하고 <우렁각시>에서는 불행보다는 행복으로 마무리하려는 의지가 강하게 나타난다. 이처럼 다른 설화적 특징과는 다른 모습을 보여주는 <우렁각시>는 현실세 계의 궁핍함을 극복하기 위한 장치로서 민중들의 사랑을 받고 전승되어 왔다. 민속지식으로 보았을 때 불행으로 끝나야 하는데도 불구하고 민중들은 행복한 결말로 마무리하려는 경향이 강하다는 점을 <우렁각시>를 통해서 읽어낼 수 있다.

The story of Wooreong Gaksi (snail bride) shows a narrative structure of an Imulgyohonor folk story about the marriage of beings that are unlikely to be married, typically a human and a nonhuman. The story of the snail bride ends both happily and tragically. The problem is that the taboo in this story is expressed differently compared to other folktales following the aforementioned narrative structure. Normally, a taboo is a social consensus that must be kept. People who do not obey it are subjected to social sanctions. Interestingly, in this story, the main character (the husband) breaks the taboo and yet the story ends positively. This paper aims to explore what leads to a different ending. Imulgyohon stories are mostly orally transmitted in Korea and normally, only the male character survives at the end of the story. The female character, on the other hand, returns to the place where she originally came from, leaving her child behind. The most famous example is a story about Jakjugeon (the grandfather of the founder of Gorye dynasty) and Jeomin (the daughter of the Dragon King in the western sea). Another example is the story about a woodcutter and a fairy. As is the general case with Imulgyohon stories, these taboo-breaking tales end tragically. However, the story of the snail bride has a different ending. In the story, the couple does not have a child; the bride surprisingly does not disappear. Although their union seems to fall apart in the beginning because of the husband’s violation, they stay together to go through a difficult situation. This kind of change reflects people’s wish to avoid tragic endings in stories. The male character in the story represents ordinary people though people do not want him to be unhappy. In the story, he almost loses his wife to a governor who symbolizes the ruling class. In the snail bride story, a taboo appears as an obstacle between a male character (the husband) and a different being (the wife). Despite the husband’s violation, they overcome problems and meet each other again. The story focuses only on the union of the couple and not a child—a strong contrast to other folktales. The story was perhaps loved by many people because the couple successfully overcomes all sorts of difficulties including poverty. The story of the snail bride has a happy ending reflecting people’s wishes.
