초록

Osteomyelitis is truly an infection of bone, and osteomyelitis of the jaws is defined as an inflammatoryprocess of the medullary portion of the affected bone and eventually extends to include the haversian systems and theperiosteum. Osteomyelitis of the jaws is caused primarily by contiguous spread of odontogenic infections originatingfrom pulpal or periodontal tissues, and infections derived from trauma, especially compound fractures, are the secondleading cause, and from the periostitis after gingival ulceration, infected lymph nodes or hematogenous origin accountfor an additional causes of jaw infections. Despite all recent advances in diagnosis and treatment modalities, such assurgical intervention, antibiotic, and hyperbaric oxygen treatment, for osteomyelitis of the jaws are well established,osteomyelitis of the jaws is still a very unique and difficult disease leading to uncertain outcomes with many complicationsinvolving facial disfigurement, loss of jaw functions by loss of affected bone, teeth, and nerve. Understandingof the pathophysiology and microbiology of the osteomyelitis is important to selection of adequate treatment, it isthought that the recent rapid progress in the research fields of tissue-engineered bone and antibiotic delivery systemsshould be adjusted and modified to the biological nature will be applicated to solve the minimal invasive treatment ofosteomyelitis of the jaws. Therefore, the present study authors reviewed about pathophysiology and microbiology ofosteomyelitis of the jaws, and recent trends of tissue engineering approaches, so intended to inform to clinicians andresearchers about whole entities of this disease.
