초록

This article discusses the text, 『Yol-Ha-Il-Gi』 by Park Ji Won as a cultural product to carry the politics, knowledge, civilization, etc of Cheong Dynasty in 18th century. Park Ji Won represented all over the things from details of trivial life to diplomatic relations with neighboring countries under the thoughts to study Cheong not to conquer. So he acted with a humble or disguise attitude and took a way of detour or enjoyment in order to reveal the Cheong’s diplomatic maneuver and Joseon’s exclusions and antagonism as an empty ideology at the same time. His work was treated as a collection of minor gossips and odd tales around his time. However, the very facts demonstrates that the impurity and contamination in the style of language performed parody of classics and trifles with loyalty and fidelity implicated in his subtext under the ethics of literal translation. Namely, he translates the culture of Cheong at the face and the problem of Joseon at the bottom side. Therefore his text, 『Yol-Ha-Il-Gi』 obtained the paradoxical meaning of the ethics of the betrayal translation which re-writes the classics of Neo-Confucianism in a way of travelog. This view results from not investigating with an historical evidence but re-writing and re-contextualizing classic texts into the modern thoughts and language under the performance of cultural translation.
