A Study on Styles of and Changing Attitude towards Korean Private Gardens

(Background and Purpose) Korea's contemporary private gardens style have been change rapidly. Recently, interest in gardening has increased to spread the garden culture in the city, and the style of gardens have varied. As such, how has the change in contemporary Korean private gardens been going on? There is a lack of historical and theoretical formulation of the garden. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of contemporary private gardens and their changes in garden perception. This study is to provide the basic data to find out the direction of strategy for the expansion of private garden in the future. (Method) The study classified and analyzed of garden by period through photos and articles published in the garden magazine. Changes in garden components such as garden style, garden plants, and garden facilities. And the perception of the garden was investigated and analyzed according to the period. (Results) As a result, Korean private gardens were influenced by the stage of economic and social development of the country. As the times change, they have evolved into various gardens style. First, Korean Garden and Japanese Garden styles were mainstream until the 1980s. Since the 1990s, a variety of garden styles have emerged, including Contury Gardens, Cottage Gardens and Family Gardens. Second, the purpose of gardening was for recreation, showing off wealth and socializing until the 1980s. Since the 2000s, gardening have been used for health, emotional stability, communication. Third, examined whether the trend of garden style, garden elements and garden perception was appropriate according to the change of the times. As a result of the multi-nominal logistic regression, garden style, composition area and garden area with less than 5% probability was statistically significant. (Conclusions) Contemporary private gardens have more varieties of garden style, size, planting trees, herbaceous plants, sculptures and decorations than in the past. Through the garden, it has been transformed into a space of restoring relationships with people and family-friendliness. The reason for this is that the opportunities for access to diverse and beautiful gardens have increased through media access, including Korea's economic growth, social welfare, increased overseas travel, and the Internet. In addition, the base of the garden has been expanded through domestic garden fairs and garden shows. Literature surveys using photographs, drawings, and interviews, which are easy to grasp the garden situation, can secure the temporal and spatial efficiency of research. And useful study that could identify the trends of Korea's contemporary private gardens by time was found. The results of this study can be used as a tool for spreading garden culture in Korea. It can also be used as a useful tool in developing programs and developing policies for garden education and awareness raising.
