A Study on the Development and Application of Human Rights Education Program for Young Children Based on the Theory of Experiential Learning

The aim of this study was to develop and apply the Human Rights Education Program for Young Children in child education institutions, and to verify its effectiveness in educating children on human rights. Subjects studied in order to verify the field applicability of this program were as follows: 20 children aged 4 years (10 girls, 10 boys) from K kindergarten in Chungchoengbuk-do, and 26 children aged 4 years (13 girls, 13 boys) at S kindergarten in Gyeonggi-do. A measuring instrument developed by Kim, Kim, & Jang (2008c) was used to evaluate children’s values and attitudes toward human rights. The field applicability of the Program was analyzed by using the Instrument of the Human Rights Evaluation for Children.
The results of this study showed graded evaluation of the children’s behavior toward the subjects of human rights were significantly higher than prior to the program’s commencement, as well as a positive improvement in the children’s behavior in five of the six categories of human rights – basic rights, equal rights, right to freedom, economic rights and political rights, though no improvement was shown in the area of social rights.
