Paul’s Use of Deuteronomy 30:12-14 in Romans 10:5-8: In Response to NPP Interpretation

Paul’s reference to righteousness by the law and the faith in Christ has caused a fierce dispute among scholars and drawn much attention. Since the debate between the New Perspective on Paul (NPP) and the traditional perspective has been taking place, the NPP built its own field. Thus, attempting to understand Paul from the NPP is no longer a new phenomenon.
In this circumstance, it is necessary to reevaluate the validity of the recent NPP and reconsider if the scholars’ interpretations of the controversial texts could be acceptable. This study examines Romans 10:5-8 in questioning the cogency of the NPP’s interpretation of these passages. In particular, one of the advocates James Dunn argues that for the Jews there was no concept of achieving righteousness by the law, perceiving righteousness in light of Jewish covenantal nomism. He interprets the texts from the positive perspective on obedience to the law characterized by faith, regarding the audience as the Diaspora Jews whose situation was regarded as exile and thereby to show faithfulness toward the Torah. This study mainly discusses how the Old Testament text was cited and reappropriated in Romans 10:5-8 through a theological-exegetical approach and a rhetorical approach. In light of the original context and main idea of Deuteronomy 30:12-14, Paul’s quotation of the text does not aim not only to lead the Diaspora Jews to abandon their national superiority and pride as God’s covenant people, but also to restore their status as God’s covenant people by reinforcing obedience to the law.
This study shows that Paul’s discourse purports to ask the Jews who denies Christ is the end and culmination of the law to accept the word of faith in which Christ's death and resurrection is a core message.
