오규 소라이와 모토오리 노리나가의 언어론과 정치론: 옛(古) 이상세계에서의 공공성과 좋은 삶 (Linguistics and Politics of Ogyu Sorai and Motoori Norinaga: Publicness and Good Life in the Ancient Utopia)

초록

본 연구는 일본 근세의 대표적 사상가인 오규 소라이와 모토오리 노리나가의 언어연구를 실마리로 삼아 좋은 삶과 공공성에 대해 탐구하는 것을 목적으로 한다.
오규 소라이는 고대 중국을 이상으로 하는 유학자, 모토오리 노리나가는 고대 일본을 이상으로 하는 국학자로서 두 사상은 대조적이지만, 그 어느 쪽도 고대의 이상세계로의 회로로서 남겨진 문헌을 독해하기 위해 언어연구를 정열적으로 행하여 고전 텍스트의 새로운 해석의 길을 열었다. 새로운 텍스트 해석에 의해 발견된 그들의 고대 이상세계의 정치상에는 공통점이 보인다. 소라이와 노리나가는 개개인의 도덕성 및 내면세계를 정치와 직접 연결시키지 않고, 정치가 기능하는 독자적 메커니즘을 발견하여 고대 이상세계에서는 이 메커니즘이 기능하고 있었기 때문에 질서가 구축되었다고 생각하고 있었다.
오규 소라이의 경우, 고대 이상세계에서는 정치적 능력을 지닌 군자가 관료제 조직의 톱니바퀴가 되어 활동함으로써 훌륭한 정치가 실현된다. 정치의 세계에 참여할 수 없는 일반 민중은 훌륭한 정치의 은혜를 받음과 동시에 각자의 직업에 충실함으로써 통치자를 돕는 관리의 역할을 하게 된다는 것이다. 모토오리 노리나가의 경우, 고대 이상세계에서는 천황의 신하들은 각자의 집안에 고유한 전문적 직무를 통해 정치의 세계에 참여한다. 일반 민중은 정치의 세계에 참여할 수 없고 통치자에 따를 수밖에 없지만, 안정된 정치가 마련하는 질서와 번영을 향수할 수가 있는 것이다. 그 어느 쪽의 경우라도 정치를 행하는 사람들은 질서 속에서 일정한 역할을 수행함으로써 좋은 삶을 살아갈 수 있으며, 정치의 세계에 참여할 수 없는 많은 일반인들은 공적 영역으로부터 자율적인 사적 영역에서 좋은 삶을 영위하는 것이 아니라, 정치공간에 의존하면서 그것을 아래로부터 지탱함으로써 행복이 보장되고 있는 것이다.
일본에서 공공 영역은 사회의 구성원의 바깥쪽에 권력적으로 존재하고 있다고 흔히 생각하는 경향이 강하고, 개인은 자기보다 상위의 보다 권력적인 공적 영역에 대해 선악시비를 묻지 않고 봉사하는 것이 요청된다. 이러한 공사관계의 양상을 재검토함으로써 ‘새로운 공공’을 열어나가기 위한 탐구가 요청되고 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relation between good life and publicness from the viewpoint of linguistics of Ogyu Sorai and Motoori Norinaga, who are important thinkers of Japanese Edo era.
Ogyu Sorai is a Confucian, whose ideal is the ancient China. Motoori Norinaga is a nativist, whose ideal is the ancient Japan. Although it seems that they have contrary thoughts, both of them eagerly studied language to read and understand ancient books which were the only way to the ancient utopia and they invented new ways to interpret classics. Their images of politics in the ancient utopia which they found by their new ways of interpretation have a common feature. Sorai and Norinaga didn’t directly connect moral or mental conditions of individuals to political conditions, but discovered the mechanism proper to politics, and they thought in the ancient utopia the political order was built because this mechanism was functioning properly.
In the case of Ogyu Sorai’s ancient utopia, men of virtue, who have not moral but political abilities, act as cogs of bureaucratic system, and good government is realized. The commons, who can’t participate in the political sphere, enjoy the benefits of good government, and, at the same time, they can be also servants of their ruler because they support their ruler by devoting themselves to their own occupations. In the case of Motoori Norinaga’s ancient utopia, the servants of the Japanese emperor participate in the political sphere through their own specialties proper to each household. The commons can’t participate in the political sphere and are only obedient to their ruler, but they can enjoy order and prosperity which is brought by stable government. In each case, the ruling classes can live good life through playing a certain role in the political system and the commons who can’t participate in the political sphere, don’t live good life in the private realm which is autonomous area distinct from the public realm, but can live happy life through depending on, and at the same time, supporting the political sphere.
In Japan, the public realm is often regarded as the realm of power existing outside of the members of the society, and individuals are often required to serve the public realm, which is superior to and more powerful than individuals, whether it is right or wrong. To explore the way to “new public commons,” it is necessary to question this relation between public and private.
