초록

이 논문은 제임스 쿡의 수천 페이지에 달하는 항해일지를 분석하여 태평양 탐사의 성과를 제시하였으며, 그것이 갖는 함의를 자유해 담론의 지구적 관철이란 맥락에서 해석하였다.
제임스 쿡의 세 차례에 걸친 태평양 탐험은 태평양에 대한 과학적 발견과 자유해 담론의 관철을 위한 토대를 제공하였다. 쿡의 성과는 세 가지 범주로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째 태평양 에는 남방대륙이 없고 대신 오스트랄라시아가 존재한다. 둘째 대서양에서 태평양으로 가는 북서항로는 없지만, 북태평양의 어자원은 풍족하며 신항로가 없어도 상업적 수익성이 있다. 셋째 태평양에서의 정확한 경도 측정과 해도 제작, 탐방 지역과 원주민에 대한 초보적인 민 족지 수준의 자연과 인문에 관한 관찰과 기록, 발견한 영토에 대한 소유권 선포 등 과학적 탐사의 모델을 제시하였다.
제임스 쿡의 태평양에 대한 과학적 발견은 영국의 오스트레일리아 식민, 북태평양에서의 모피 교역 활성화, 태평양에 대한 해문 및 인문 지식의 축적 경쟁으로 이어졌다. 제임스 쿡 의 성과를 전환점으로 자유해 담론이 태평양에서도 전면적으로 관철되었다. 태평양에서의 항 해와 교역의 자유, 발견한 도서와 영토에 대한 실효적 지배 원칙, 즉 자유해 담론으로 무장 한 해양열강들의 태평양 진출이 본격적으로 시작되었던 것이다. 제임스 쿡 탐사 이후 조선의 해안선에도 영국의 탐사선이 출현하며, 조선과 조선인에 대한 해문과 인문 정보가 관찰 기록 되고 출간되었다.
제임스 쿡의 태평양에 대한 과학적 발견은 영국의 국익에 기여하였고 국가 프로젝트의 기 획과 목적에 부합하였으며, 자유해 담론의 태평양으로의 확대 적용을 가능하게 만들었다.

영어초록

This paper analyzes Captain James Cook’s logbooks to present the achievements of his Pacific exploration, interpreting their implications in the context of the global implementation of the “free seas” discourse. Cook’s three Pacific expeditions provided the foundation for scientific discoveries about the Pacific and for the promotion of the free seas discourse. These achievements can be summarized in three categories.
First, there is no Southern Continent(Terra Australis Incognita) in the Pacific, but instead, Australasia exists. Second, while there is no Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific, the North Pacific is abundant in marine resources, and despite of failing to find out new passage, commercial profitability is still feasible. Third, Cook’s precise measurement of longitude in the Pacific, the creation of nautical charts, and his elementary ethnographic observations and records of nature and the people of the explored regions laid out a model for scientific exploration. He also declared sovereignty over discovered territories.
Cook’s scientific discoveries in the Pacific led to British colonization of Australia, the activation of the fur trade in the North Pacific, and competition in the accumulation of maritime & environmental and ethnogarphical information about the Pacific. Cook’s achievements marked a turning point, as the free seas discourse was fully implemented in the Pacific. The freedom of navigation and trade in the Pacific, as well as the principle of effective domination over discovered islands and territories, led to the full-fledged advancement of maritime powers into the Pacific, armed with the free seas discourse. After Cook’s explorations, British exploratory vessels began to appear along the Joseon(Korean) coastline, and maritime and ethnographic information about Joseon and its people was observed, recorded, and published.
Cook’s scientific discoveries about the Pacific contributed to Britain’s national interests and aligned with the planning and objectives of national projects with the global implementation of free seas discourse.
