This study aims to provide rational decision-making strategies for onion farmers considering the adoption of an blower-type onion stem cutters(BG-1300SC, Bulls Co., Ltd.) by evaluating user satisfaction with its improvements and analyzing the associated costs and benefits. The study seeks to address the labor shortages commonly encountered during the onion harvest season. Based on an average cultivation area of 12,000 pyeong(39,669.4215m ) reported by respondents, 2 the analysis indicates that the total investment cost of purchasing and operating the blower-type onion stem cutters for self-use over a ten-year period amounts to 72,096,884 KRW. This exceeds the labor cost savings(benefits) of 48,395,971 KRW obtained from transitioning to mechanized operations by 23,700,913 KRW, rendering the investment economically unviable. Conversely, for smaller-scale farms with a cultivation area of 1,000pyeong(3,305.78512m ), renting the blower-type 2 onion stem cutters for mechanized operations results in a total investment cost of 3,530,531 KRW over ten years. This is 492,308 KRW less than the cost savings (benefits) of 4,022,839 KRW realized by replacing manual labor with mechanized operations during the same period, making this approach economically feasible. The findings suggest that for onion farms with cultivation areas of 28,000pyeong(92,561.9835m ) or more, purchasing and operating the blower-type onion 2stem cutters becomes economically advantageous, as the total investment cost over ten years is lower than the labor cost savings realized through mechanization. In contrast, small-scale farms with cultivation areas of approximately 1,000pyeong(3,305.78512m ) are advised to utilize rental services provided by local agricultural technology centers, as direct ownership incurs additional costs such as depreciation, repairs, and interest, making rental a more cost-effective option. Given the anticipated exacerbation of labor shortages in the agricultural sector, further research is warranted to evaluate the economic viability of mechanization for other onion harvesting operations, including digging and collection. Such studies would support more informed decision-making among onion farmers regarding comprehensive mechanization strategies.
