A Post X-bar Theory Framework: A Double Tier Approach to Sentence Creation

The purpose of this article is to discuss Chomsky’s (1970) X-bar Theory and Chomsky’s (1994) Bare Phrase Structure Theory and suggest that they are problematic in significant respects. The frameworks of X-bar Theory and Bare Phrase Structure Theory have problems. First, X-Bar Theory makes use of categorial projections such as head projection, intermediate bar projection, and maximal projection when implementing merge and move. This violates the Inclusiveness Condition. Second, X-bar Theory and Bare Phrase Structure Theory make use of artificial lines to represent the unity of two syntactic objects. This also violates the Inclusiveness Condition. Third, when implementing the move operation, X-bar Theory carries along not only lexical items but also the categorial projections of the lexical items. This causes computational complexity. Fourth, in X-bar Theory and Bare Phrase Structure Theory, head movement takes place from a head position to another head position, leading to the violation of the Extension Condition. Fifth, Bare Phrase Structure Theory employs artificial notation to distinguish between substitution and adjunction. This causes computational complexity and violates the Inclusiveness Condition.
For a solution to all these problems Double Tier Theory is provided as an alternative framework for building sentences, and a new definition of C-command is also provided that works in the alternative framework.
