네덜란드 장르화와 엠블럼 판화의 융합: 얀 라이켄(Jan Luyken)의 엠블럼집 (The Convergence of Dutch Genre Painting and Emblematic Prints: Jan Luyken’s Het Leerzaam Huisraad(1711))

초록

17세기 엠블럼집 출판이 가장 융성하던 시기, 당대 가장 최신 경향인 장르화 양식을 엠블럼 판화가 수용하는 과정을 고찰한다. 초기 정치선전이나 지식인들의 유희거리로 양식적인 면보다는 내용적인 가치가 더 주목받았던 엠블럼집 판화가 17세기에 들어와서 어떻게 회화적인 양식으로 변모하고, 엠블럼 판화로서 새로운 가치를 인정받게 되는지 당대 다작 삽화가이자 판화가였던 얀 라이켄의 <교훈적인 가정용품들>의 재현된 장르화적 요소와 17세기말고가로 판매되었던 고급 장르화(High Quality Genre Painting)의 조형요소와 기법을 분석하여 장르화와 엠블럼 판화의 융합현상을 살펴본다.
<교훈적인 가정용품들>은 종교적인 명상을 담은 종교 엠블럼집이지만,소재부터 가정용품을 선택하여 네덜란드인들의 관심덕목이자 네덜란드 장르화의 주요 주제와 연결시켰다. 가정용품은 장르화를 이용할 수 있는 좋은 주제이고 최신 경향을 소개 할 수 있는 소재였기 때문이기도 하지만, 내용적인면에서도 ‘가정생활’은 당대 네덜란드인들의 가장 큰 관심거리 중에 하나였기때문이다. 당대 가정생활교본에서 가장 많이 다루어진 건전한 가정과 여성의덕목, 청소, 실잣기, 자녀 양육등을 강조하던 장르화의 주제와 같은 구도와 형태등이 라이켄의 판화에서도 동일하게 나타난다.
라이켄이 쓴 화면구성법과 사물배치, 물건선택등도 당대 가장 인기있었던 장르화와 고급 장르화(High Quality Genre Painting)의 특성이 반영된다. 야외 풍경의 도입과 한 방에서 다른 방의 정경이 보이는 도어지엔 기법, 실내장면을 구성할 때 벽꾸밈 방법이나 가구의 배치, 등도 장르화에서 볼 수 있는구성방법을 수용하고 있다. 기본적인 장르화의 구성 뿐 아니라 17세기 말기에유행했던 고가의 고급 장르화의 양식도 적용하고 있다. 프랑스 취향을 반영한고전 주두, 팀파늄등 고전 건축의 요소들이 화면 곳곳에 보이며, 인물들도 우아한 자세와 손동작, 평화롭고 고요한 표정, 콘트라포스토 등 이상화된 인물들의 전형적인 특징이 보이며, 등장인물의 의상은 드레이퍼리가 강조된 고전적인 의상과 엘리트계층에서 유행하던 타바드도 보인다. 또한 값비싼 물건들과 최신 유행의 가구, 소품 등이 포함되었다. 얀 라이켄의 자신의 판화에 당대가장 인기있었던 미술의 장르인 장르화의 회화적 장치들을 적용했다는 것은작품의 수용자, 엠블럼집의 고객을 의식한 판매 전략으로 해석할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

With reference to Jan Luyken's emblematic prints, this paper emphasizesLuyken’s treatment of pictorial space, his method of description, and hisreference to contemporary art theory. Close examination of the pictorialsimilarity between images in Het Leerzaam Huisraad and contemporary genrepainting and prints demonstrates that Luyken's work accorded with majordevelopments in seventeenth-century Dutch art.
The subject matters in Het Leerzaam Huisraad are parallel with the topics ofcomtemporary genre painting emphasizing wholesome household andwomen’s virtue. Figures in many prints in Het Leerzaam Huisraad seem to befamily members since Luyken’s scenes take place in a household setting.
Pictorial compositions are also reminiscent of contemporary family portraitsdepicting family saying Grace. Cleaning, spinning, and childrearing wereongoing female subjects in Dutch genre painting. We find many exemplarydiligent women dressed in aprons and white caps and entirely absorbed intheir activities.
Scrutiny of Jan Luyken’s prints in Het Leerzaam huisraad reveals Luyken’sdirect engagement with the contemporary art world. The vocabularies Luykenemployed in his prints, for instance, his choice of household articles for hissubject matter, his high-quality genre painting style, and the inclusion ofdoorsien and night scenes are all examples of contemporary pictorial devices popular in Luyken’s time. The display of material goods, including furniture,so visibly in genre painting is linked with pride of possession and theconsciousness of social status.
Luyken also employs the style of late seventeenth-century High Quality Genrepainting reflecting the French taste. The works of Frans van Mieris, Eglon vander Neer and Johannes Verkolje show many similarities and they seem tohave offered the pictorial sources for Luyken’s choice of object and itsdisplay. Elements of classical architecture, idealization of figure and theirpose, the mood of calm and refinement and expensively furnished interiorcould be the elements from the High Quality Genre painting.
Luyken’s choice of topic and style in Het Leerzaam Huisraad demonstratesthat he was very conscious of his purchasers. Luyken consciously includedluxury items and fancy ornaments as a strategy to make his work moreappealing to contemporary buyers. Moreover, luxury and extravagance wereon-going moral issues for Dutch religious leaders. However, for readersconspicuous consumption of wealth was also an interesting and appealingtopic that modern home magazines' fashionable representations could givereaders visual pleasure. It could appeal to elites as well as to people of lowerclass who wanted to imitate their superior’s refined taste. In this sense,Luyken’s prints could have appealed to every class of buyers. I argue thatthe prints in Het Leerzaam Huisraad demonstrates the convergence ofemblematical prints and genre painting.
