입신출세의 상경길, 욕망의 길-野譚을 통해 본- (Travelling to Seoul for a Successful Career The Road of Desire Seen -Through Ya-Dam-)

초록

입신출세를 위해 여행하는 상경자의 모습은 낭만적 면모와 거리가 멀다. 상경자가 여행 과정에서 부딪치는 현실의 삶 또한 녹녹치 않다. 부당한 죽임을 당한 주인의 복수, 환관의 어린 아내가 겪는 성의 질곡, 경제적 궁핍으로 인한 좌절, 억울한 죽음 등 현실의 여러 가지 모순을 담고 있는 것이다. 난관에 처한 조우자의 고뇌와 분노, 삶의 의지가 포착되는 바, 조우자의 욕망 해결의 의지는 입신출세의 상경담에서 중요한 기능을 한다.
그러나 조우자의 문제는 상경자의 도움에 의해 해결된다. 상경자는 조우자의 중대한 문제를 해결하고 상경하는 바, 당대 현실의 문제를 해결할 수 있는 능력 또는 자질을 지닌 존재이다. 그러나 정작 입신출세라는 자신의 문제 앞에서는 무기력하다. 욕망 실현을 위한 실질적인 능력이 전혀 발휘되지 않는다. 입신출세의 난망이라는 현실의 벽으로 인해, 서사의 공간에서조차 개별 주체의 능력을 수용할 수 없었던 것이다.
그럼에도 불구하고 상경자는 입신출세의 욕망을 실현하게 되는 바, 입신출세에 대한 강렬한 의지와 여행과정에서 쌓은 德業이 중요한 기능을 한다. 그렇지만 긍정적 결말의 직접적인 동인은 운명 또는 하늘의 힘, 보은 등으로 이해할 수 있는 제 삼의 힘이다.
상경자가 겪은 사건은 욕망의 실현을 위한 우회적 장치이다. 입신출세의 난망이라는 현실을 극복하기 위한 낭만적 장치로서 보은담의 구조를 빌려온 것이다. 현실의 벽을 넘기 위한 문학적 장치라 할 수 있다. 그러나 보은담의 내용은 상투적이지 않다. 구체적인 인물의 상호 관계에 의한 서사가 진행되는 것이다. 특히 상경자와 조우자의 소통과 연대가 주목되는 바, 긍정적 결말을 위한 중요한 장치이다. 이를 바탕으로 새로운 삶을 위한 모색과 실천, 긍정적 세계관이 낭만적으로 그려지고 있는 것이다.
결국 입신출세의 길, 욕망의 길을 다룬 야담 작품은 현실의 어려운 조건을 이겨내고자 하는 당대인들의 긍정적 사유와 낭만적 정조가 이루어낸 문학적 상상의 결과라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

A man travels to Seoul for a chance of a successful career. He has realistic expectations and is not filled with romanticism and disillusionment. On his journey, he experiences obstacles and challenges including witnessing trial and tribulations endured by others. For example, he sees a man seeking revenge for a master’s unfair slaying of servants, young wives of eunuchs suffering from their sexual fetter, people who are frustrated and destitute set by a difficult economy, and society’s acceptance of unjust deaths. As the traveler witnesses and personally experience inequities and injustice on his route to Seoul, he contemplates about his sincere motive and desire for wanting a successful career.
On his journey, the traveler encounters other people who are going to Seoul for a similar purpose, that is, for more opportunity and a better life. His encounters with others help him to learn from their experiences and he greatly benefits from their recommendations and advice. Although the traveler is gifted and talented, his travelling companions are the ones who help him resolve his problems. It is ironic that they are able to resolve the traveler’s problem, but are unable to resolve their own. There seems to be a contradiction on the part of the advisors as though their wisdom and objectivity are only applicable to others.
This is a critical and important trip for the traveler not only for the opportunity for a successful career in Seoul but also for his life. He is fearful of the uncertainties and his financial position and his fear does not subside nor does he find the conditions of the society acceptable, but it is on this trip to Seoul that he realizes that he cannot succeed independently of others. His realizes that his ego cannot supercede the necessity of working with others and that success isn’t achievable by oneself which is an important lesson learned.
The numerous conversations that he had with his travelling companions humbly revealed to the traveler that no matter how strong his desire to achieve a successful career, success does not come by compiling virtuous deeds and although ability, effort, knowledge, experience and luck are important components, they are not guarantees. Instead, he believes that success comes by overcoming your own fear and doubts of failure and empowering yourself with positive thinking, having a grateful heart, and not losing sight of the vision and purpose of life.
