매출액과 영업이익 둘째자리 숫자의 비정상성에 대한 연구 (A Study on Unusual Patterns in Second Digit Numbers on Sales and Operating Income)

초록

본 연구는 벤포드 규칙을 이용하여 매출액과 영업이익의 둘째자리 숫자에 9가 표시되는 것을 기피하는 패턴이 나타나는지를 살펴보고, 이것이 매출액과 영업이익의 첫자리 숫자를 한 단위 높은 값으로 표시하기 위한 조작행위와 관련이 있는지를 규명한다. 이 분석에는 최근 3개연도(2009년∼2011년) 1,707개의 상장기업 및 12,791개의 비상장기업의 총 43,494 기업-연도 자료가 사용되었다.
주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 매출액의 둘째자리 숫자는 낮은 수인 0의 빈도가 높고, 높은 수인 7과 9의 빈도가 유의하게 낮았다. 둘째, 영업이익의 둘째자리 숫자는 낮은 수인 0과 1의 빈도가 기대빈도보다 유의하게 높게 나타났다. 즉 영업이익과 매출액 둘째자리 숫자의 분포에 비정상성이 있음이 확인되었다. 이것은 매출액이나 영업이익의 첫자리를 한 단위 높은 숫자로 표시하기 위하여 상향조작과 관련이 있을 것으로 추정된다. 이러한 추정을 확인하기 위해 매출액과 영업이익의 둘째자리 숫자의 비정상성이 매출액이나 영업이익을 상향 조작하는지를 추가로 분석하였다. 그 결과 매출액이나 영업이익의 둘째자리 숫자가 0이면서 첫 두자리 숫자가 기대빈도보다 높은 경우에는 유의한 양의 비정상매출채권과 비정상영업발생액이 나타난다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Firms have various forms of motives for earnings management. For example, to smooth income and, thereby, create image that a firm is low-risk to investors or creditors (Ronen and Sadan 1981) or to enhance executive bonuses tied to income (Watts and Zimmerman 1978; Healy 1985). Furthermore, the earnings are managed to achieve some cognitive reference points in income, i.e. to avoid reporting losses or decreases in earnings (Burgstahler and Dichev 1997) or to meet analysts’ earnings expectations, thus maintaining a steady growth in share price (Degeorge et al. 1999). In a subset of earnings management of this type, there is a case in which the first digit in earnings numbers is the objectives as a cognitive reference points.
Carslaw (1988) finds that firms try to round up a second digit on earnings number to report a higher first digit on earnings number. If such manipulation occurs, the frequency of occurrence of the second digit in earnings would not follow expected frequencies. The frequencies in second digit numbers in earnings will have an unusual pattern, like as high frequency in zeros and few frequency in nines. Crucial to this research is specifying an appropriate expected frequency of second digit numbers for earnings. The digital frequencies developed by Benford (1938) are used as an appropriate expected frequency of second digit numbers. This study extends this line of research by replicating Carslow (1988) study using recent data on Korean firms.
This study investigates whether firms continue to manipulate earnings to achieve cognitive reference points in income in spite of the increased pressure to present fair and transparent financial reporting. Additionally, this study investigates whether this type of earnings manipulation exists in the second digit on sales numbers or operating income numbers. Results show that the evidence on manipulation of second digit on earnings numbers is reconfirmed for Korean firms and that the evidence on manipulation of second digit on sales and operating income numbers is found for the first time.
