비엣 탄 응웬의 동조자에 나타난 형제애 고찰과 국제관계론적 해석 (A Study on Brotherhood in The Sympathizer by Viet Thanh Nguyen and the Interpretation in Terms of International Relations)

초록

비엣탄응웬(Viet Thanh Nguyen)의 소설 동조자 속 세 명의 남성 등장인물들은 베트남전쟁과 이후 시기를 거치는 동안 자유주의와 공산주의의 서로 다른 정치이념을 추구하면서도 서로의 안위를 우선한 진한 형제애를 가진다. 그들의 형제애는 동포애와 인류애로 확장될 만큼 당시뿐만 아니라현재 베트남, 미국, 한국과 같은 베트남전쟁 당사국 사이에 조성된 우호적인 국제관계에 시사하는 바가적지 않다. 이 논문은 응웬의 화제작『동조자』에 등장한 남성 등장인물들이 함께 살아가고자 하는 형제애에 담긴 함의를 주로 베트남전쟁 이후 국제관계를 중심으로 고찰한다. 이를 위해서 우선 이 작품에대한 일반적인 연구 경향과 형제애를 설명한 선행연구를 비판적으로 분석함으로써 국제관계론적 해석의 필요성을 진단한다. 다음으로 형제애를 중심으로 본문을 다시 읽고 나서, 베트남전쟁 시기와 이후국제정세와 정치이념의 허구성을 밝힌 다음 소설에 나타난 형제애의 의미를 조명하고, 그것을 국제관계론적으로 당시 상황에 적용한다. 이 연구는 기존 접근법들과 다르게 중간자 역할을 담당한 주인공과그의 친구들 간 우정이 현재의 국제관계에도 적용 가능한 평화윤리가 될 수 있음을 밝혔다는데 의의를둔다. 더하여 이 논문은 미국과 프랑스 등 서방, 중국과 러시아의 공산주의 세력, 일본제국 등의 외세개입 때문에 발생한 베트남 등 아시아 국가들의 아픈 역사에 대한 공감대를 강조한다. 마지막으로 소설의 결말에서 주인공이 우리는 살 것이라고 다짐한 문구가 가진 함의에 대한 고찰을 후속 연구로 예상한다.

영어초록

During the Vietnam War and later periods, the three male characters in Viet Thanh Nguyen's novel, The Sympathizer, have a strong brotherhood that prioritizes each other's safety while pursuing different political ideologies of liberalism and communism. Their brotherhood has many implications for the friendly international relations established between the countries, such as Vietnam, the United States, and South Korea, to The Vietnam War as well as at the time, as it extends to fraternity and humanity. This paper examines the implications of the brotherhood in which the male characters in Nguyen's hottest work, The Sympathizer, want to live together, focusing on international relations mostly after The Vietnam War. To this end, this paper first diagnoses the necessity of interpretation in terms of international relations theory by critically analyzing the general research trend and previous studies that explained brotherhood of this work.
Next, after rereading the text focusing on brotherly love, the researcher reveals the fictitious nature of the international situation and political ideology during and after The Vietnam War, and then illuminates the meaning of brotherly love in the novel, and applies it to the situation at the time in terms of international relations. Contrary to the existing approaches, this study is especially meaningful in revealing that the friendship between the protagonist, who plays the role of intermediary, and his two friends, can be a peace ethics applicable to current international relations. In addition, this paper emphasizes the consensus on the painful history due to the foreign intervention of Western countries such as the United States and France, Communist forces of China and Russia, and the Empire of Japan. Finally, a follow-up study is expected to examine the implications of the phrase in which the protagonist vowed to live in the plural at the end of the novel.
