양태 표지 ‘–어야 하–’의 사용 양상에 대한 일고찰 (A Note on the Usage of Modality Marker ‘–eya ha–’)

This study aims to examine the usage of the modality marker ‘–eya ha–’. Specifically, it revisits the findings of previous studies and elucidates new aspects of its usage. The results are as follows. First, ‘–eya ha–’ is most frequently combined with ‘–keyss–’, ‘–ul kesi–’, and ‘–ul kes kath–’. Second, when combined with epistemic markers, ‘–eya ha–’ can function as a directive speech act of ‘instruction’ or ‘suggestion’, without any epistemic connotation. Third, when combined with ‘–keyss–’, ‘–eya ha–’ can signify the non–combinatory meanings of the speaker’s ‘(strong) intention’ or ‘decision’. Fourth, when combined with ‘–lyeko ha–’, ‘–eya ha–’ can represent the non-combinatory meaning of an ‘obligation to perform an intentional act or trial’. Fifth, in cases where ‘–eya ha–’ indicates counterfactuality combined with ‘–ess–’, relevant factors such as the postposition (or clitic) attached to the subject, the interrogative sentence type, and the existence of ‘–eya toy–’ and ‘–essess–’ should be considered. The present study does not converge into a single theme in examining various phenomena related to the use of ‘–eya ha–’. However, it does contribute to related research by allowing for a comprehensive view of the usage patterns of ‘–eya ha–’, including aspects that may be overlooked because they do not constitute a sufficiently large independent research topic.
