비유 해석과 설교: 복음서의 겨자씨비유를 중심으로 (Parable Interpretation and Preaching: The Mustard Seed in Three Gospels)

지난 2천년의 교회역사가 말해주듯이 복음서에 나타난 비유에 대한 해석은언제나 논쟁의 한 가운데에 있었다. 필자는 크레그 블롬버그의 “알레고리적비유해석”에 대한 논지를 출발점으로 삼아 비유해석과 설교에 있어서 몇 가지 중요한 진단과 처방을 내리고 있다. 무엇보다 비유가 복음서의 내러티브속에서 “하나의 요점”을 가지고 있다는 사실을 결코 포기해서는 안 되는 이유를 말하고 있다. 내러티브의 앞뒤 흐름을 살펴봄으로써 궁극적으로 비유의 목적이 무엇을 말하고자 하는 것인가, 하는 점을 망각해서는 안 되기 때문이다.
“알레고리적 해석”의 가장 큰 문제는 본문의 명확한 의미에 집중하는 대신 본문과는 무관한 다른 의미들을 내포하는 것으로 바꿔놓기 때문이다. 이러한 해석은 또한 전체적인 역사적, 문학적 맥락을 무시한 채, 아주 작은 단락에만 초점을 맞추어, 본문의 의미의 발견보다는, 해석자가 본문을 통해서발견하고자 하는 의미를 집어넣으려는 노력, 소위 탈문맥화의 오류에 빠지게 된다. 비유 자체뿐만 아니라, 비유를 담고 있는 앞뒤 맥락이 복음서 내러티브의 특정한 효과를 만들어 내는데 매우 중요한 역할을 하고 있는 것이다.
필자는 병행본문을 가지고 있는 복음서의 “겨자씨 비유”를 사례로하여 비유해석의 열쇠를 쥐고 있는 것이 복음서 기자들이 펼쳐주고 있는 내러티브의 앞뒤 맥락임을 말하고 있다. 복음서 기자가 당시의 독자들을 향하여 설정하고 있는 내러티브의 흐름을 살펴봄으로써, 현대 독자들은 어렵지 않게 “하나의 주요 요점”을 발견하게 된다. 성경 해석은 본문의 원형을 밝히려는 역사적 의미(meaning)와 더불어 그것이 특히 각 복음서의 상황 속에서 어떠한 의의(significance)를 갖고 있는지를 다루며 더 나아가 오늘날의 청중들에게 어떠한 적실성을 가져야 하는지를 고민하는 작업임을 말하고 있다.

영어초록

It has been said that parable interpretation is a “wild jungle” or “hot potato” in the Biblical studies in the long history of church. It is not because Jesus’ parable is in itself too difficult to interpret nor too mysterious to acknowledge, but because it is put on the “wrong” table of scholarship, i.e., the problem of historical authenticity of the Biblical parable. In his work, “Interpreting the Parables”, Craig Blomberg well explores the vast scope of history in parable interpretation and asserts that Jesus’ parable must not be restricted by one point interpretation. Instead, he boldly proposes more alternatives for it, i.e., two point interpretation or even three, re-opening a dogged tradition of “allegorical interpretation.” In so doing, his interpretation again fell into the problem of decontextualiztion by focusing just on the smaller than the larger unit of the text. His problem that I point out is that he does not take parabolic context and its large narrative flow seriously. He too is revolving around and returning to the exhaustive theme of “historical problem.”What we would read the parable along with the narrative is not to be trapped by such fallacies. Reading the parables along with and in the narrative helps us to grasp the continual and consequential relationship of the parables with their immediate and surrounding texts. Each pericope always exists as part of the whole. Moreover, parabolic language as narrative is not philosophical nor conceptual, but instead much more practical and of everday life, which would be read as dialogue, not as monologue, between God and man. Accordingly the meaning of each unit or parable is to be determined by the narrative and its context. I propose the importance of reading narratives and contexts of the parables that must hold the key of their meaning. I try to interpret one of the Synoptic parables, the parable of The Mustard Seed, which has parallel passages in three Gospels. In my reading of these parables, I can explore the meanings of parables that are apparently exposed in each creative narratives by the gospel writers.
