백석 시에 나타난 ‘동물’과 원시적 감성 고찰 (The Study of Animals and Primitive Emotion in Baekseok’s Poetry)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 백석 시에 나타난 동물을 중심으로 원시성을 살펴보는 데 있다. 「여우난골족(族)」에서 마을 사람들이 살아가는 모습은 동물들의 삶과 상통하다. 예를 들어, 「여우난골족(族)」에 나타난 고모들은 저마다 아픔을 간직한 사람들이다. 하지만 그녀들은 명절날 서로 하나가 되며 아픔을 승화시키며 아무 일 없이 잘 지낸다. 이는 그들의 삶이 동물처럼 자연 상태 그대로이기에 이해될 수 있는 것이다. 이런 점에서 볼 때, 마을 사람들은 서로 분리되어 있는 것처럼 보이지만 조화를 이루며 서로 하나가 되어 있다. 이는 자연과 인간의 경계의 초월을 보여주며 마을을 더욱 원초적 세계에 놓여 있게 만든다.
그 다음, 백석 시에 나타난 여러 동물의 표상은 시적 화자와 동일시되었다. 이런 점은 「멧새소리」의 “나도 길다랗고 파리한 명태다”란 표현을 통해 알 수 있다. 즉, 동물은 개체성이 없기에 새로운 연속성을 가지게 된다. 시적 화자는 동물이 가지고 있는 연속성을 통해 존재의 확장을 경험하게 된다. “나도 길다랗고 파리한 명태”라는 표현 속에서 화자는 서럽고 차가운 감정에 몰입하게 된다. 이는 시적 화자와 동물과의 동일시를 보여주는 증거이고 또한 이는 동물과 인간의 구별이 없음을 나타내주는 것이다. 이런 점에서 미루어 보아, 시적 화자는 명태를 통해 원시적 감성인 내면 세계와 외부의 자연 세계가 분리가 없는 총체성을 지니게 된다. 이런 점은 원시적 감성으로, 본질적인 마음의 상태이다.
이후 백석은 안정적인 내면 세계를 확립하고 동화시집 『집게네 네 형제』에서 공동체 지향을 꿈꾼다. 특히, 「개구리네 한솥밥」은 개구리의 모험담을 담은 시편이다. 개구리는 자신도 바쁜 처지이지만 어려운 친구들을 도와주고 나중에 자신도 도움을 받게 된다. 시인은 개구리를 통해 서로 깊이 이해하고 배려하는 공동체를 만들어 나간다. 이는 본질적인 가치이다. 즉, 백석은 원시적 감성을 바탕으로 동물을 통해 보다 본질적인 가치인 공동체 지향으로 발전한다. 시인은 동화시에 나타난 동물을 통해 모든 고립되어 있는 것들에 서로 이어주며 주변 모든 것들을 감싸며 평화로운 세계를 만든다. 이런 관점에서 백석에게 원시적 감성은 근본적인 사유이다.

영어초록

This study will investigate primitive meanings of Baekseok’s poetry focusing on animals. The way of living of the villagers appearing in “The Village Where a Fox Was Born” has something in common with the way of living of animals. In other words, all villagers have their own pains, such as Sinri aunt “whose face has star marks”, Tosan aunt who became “a second wife of a widower aged over 40 at the age of 16”, and the eldest aunt who is “a widow with red end of her nose wearing white clothes always”. However, the reason they can become one lightly on the holiday and sublimate their pains is because they live as they are like animals. There is no superiority or power in the animal’s life. In this context, the villager’s life is a state of nature as animals. Although they looks separated from each other, they communicate and are in harmony with each other. This is to show the primitive world.
Next, symbols of many animals in Baekseok’s poetry were expressed identified with the poetic narrator. This attribute is shown in his poem, “I am also a long pale pollack”: because animals do not have individuality, they have a new continuity, and this feature opens even a new possibility. That is, the poetic narrator establishes his being through the continuity animals have. That is, in the expression “I am also a long pale pollack”, he is immersed in the sad and cold feelings. This is a homogeneous aspect between I and pollack, which shows animals and human beings are not different and essentially the same. In light of this, the poetic narrator shows through pollack the totality that the inner world and the outer natural world are not separated. This is primitive emotion, a state of essential mind.
After that, Baekseok dreams community orientation based on the stable inner world through animals in the collections of fairy tale poems. Especially, a collection of fairy tale poems Four Brother of the Hermit Crab Family is composed of animal stories for child readers. Especially, “A Pot of Boiled Rice of a Frog and Its Friends” shows a frog is helped by its friends that it helped in the day, when it is in trouble. This poem shows community orientation through animals. The poet shows the essential and primitive value through a frog in the end. In his early poems, the poet recognized through animals totality which the inner world and the outer natural world are not separated, which is primitive emotion, which makes the poet establish the inner world. After that, he goes toward community orientation, more essential value, through animals based on the primitive emotion. The poet gives relationship between all isolated beings, embraces everything around him, and makes a peaceful world through animals appearing in his fairy tale poems. In this context, the primitive emotion is fundamental and essential to Baekseok.
