조선 개국과 한양 조씨 가문의 역할 (The Foundation of Joseon dynasty and the role of the Hanyang Cho Clan)

초록

고려 말 동북면 지역에서 강력한 토호로서 영향력을 행사한 한양 조씨에 대해서는 기록이 거의 남아있지 않다. 이에 그 세력기반이나 정치적 성장 과정에 대해 자세한 내용을 파악할 수는 없으나, 조선 개국 과정에서 정치적 역할을 담당하면서 명문거족으로 성장하고 있는 모습을 확인할 수 있다.
한양 조씨는 고려후기에 한양에서 함경도 용진현으로 이주하여, 동북면에 세거해 온 토착 사족의 후예로 趙暉가 몽골에 투항한 후에 쌍성총관부의 초대 총관이 되어 약 100여 년간 대대로 세습했다. 이와 달리 조휘의 손자인 조돈은 고려에 협력하여 고려 이주민의 쇄환과 쌍성총관부 수복 등에 공을 세우고 공민왕대 예의판서를 역임하였다. 조돈의 아들 조인벽은 이성계의 매부로 공양왕대 삼사좌사에 올랐으며, 조인옥은 밀직대언을 역임하고 조선 개국 후 개국1등공신에 책봉되었다. 조인벽의 아들 조온은 조선 개국⋅정사⋅좌명 3공신에 책봉되었으며, 아들 조연은 좌명공신에 책봉되었다. 조휘의 종증손인 조영무 또한 개국⋅정사⋅좌명 3공신에 책봉되고, 태종대 우정승이 되었다.
조씨 일문이 동북면에서 강력한 세력으로 자리 잡고 있던 시기에 이씨 세력 또한 동북면 지역에서 세력을 확장하고 있었다. 그리고 이씨 세력이 조씨 집안과 대등할 정도로 세력을 확장한 시기는 이성계의 조부인 李椿 때에 이르러서이며, 아버지 李子春 때에 동북면 지역의 가장 강력한 세력으로 자리 잡으면서 뒷날 이성계가 조선왕조를 개국하게 되는 세력기반이 되었다.
이 과정에서 조씨 세력은 이씨와 혼인을 통해 밀접한 관계를 맺기도 하고, 직위 계승을 둘러싸고 서로 경쟁을 벌이기도 하였다. 한양 조씨 일문은 고려 공민왕 때의 쌍성총관부 수복을 게기로 고려 중앙정계에 진출하였다. 그리고 위화도 회군과 조선왕조의 개국 과정에서 이성계의 정치적, 군사적 세력기반으로 활동하면서 정치적 성장을 이루어냈다. 곧 한양 조씨는 동북면 지역에서 세력을 키우고 고려 중앙정계에 진출하자마자 곧바로 정치적 영향력을 키우고 조선왕조의 개국과 태종 이방원의 집권과정에서 지원세력으로 활동하면서 명문거족으로 성장하는 토대를 마련할 수 있었던 것이다.

영어초록

There is little record of Hanyang Cho Clan, who exerted influence as a strong local authority in the northeast area of the late Goryeo Dynasty. As a result, details of its power base or political growth process could not be grasped, but it was confirmed that it was growing into a prestigious tribe while playing a political role in the process of establishing Joseon.
Hanyang Cho moved from Hanyang to Yongjin-hyeon, Hamgyeong-do in the late Goryeo Dynasty, and after he surrendered to Mongolia as a descendant of an indigenous clan who lived in Northeast-myeon, he became the first commander of the Ssangseong General Office and inherited it for about 100 years. However, Jo Yang-ki's son, Jo Don, cooperated with Goryeo to contribute to the conversion of Goryeo immigrants and the restoration of the Ssangseong General Administration and served as a courtesy judge of the King of the People. Jo In-byeok, Jo In-byeok, the son of Jodon, was appointed to the Samsa Jwasa Temple of the reign of King Gongyang as the brother-in-law of Lee Seong-gye, and Jo In-ok served as the Miljik Daeseon and was appointed as the first contributor to the country after the founding of Joseon Dynasty. Jo In-byeok's son Jo In-byeok was appointed to the 3rd Gongsin of Joseon, Jeongsa, and Jwamyeong, and his son Jo Yeon-jo was appointed to the Jwamyeong Gongsin. In addition, Cho Young-moo, Jo Hwi's great-grandson, was also appointed to the three contributors of the founding, Jeongsa, and Jwamyeong.
At a time when the Cho clan was established as a strong force in Northeast-myeon, the Lee clan was also expanding its power in Northeast-myeon. And it was during Lee Seong-gye's grandfather, Lee Seong-gye's reign, that Lee Seong-gye's power expanded to the extent that it was equal to the Cho family, and later became the foundation for Lee Seong-gye to establish the Joseon Dynasty. In the process, Cho's forces formed a close relationship with Lee through marriage, and competed with each other regarding the succession of their positions.
The family of Hanyang Cho entered the central government of Goryeo with the restoration of the Ssangseong General Government during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo. In addition, Yuhwa also achieved political growth by acting as the political and military power base of Lee Seong-gye during the founding of the Hoi-gun and the Joseon Dynasty. Soon after, Hanyang Cho grew his power in the northeastern region, immediately grew his political influence as soon as he entered the central government of Goryeo, and grew into a prestigious family by serving as a support force in the founding of the Joseon Dynasty and the ruling of King Taejong Lee Bang-won.
