초록

이 논문은 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 작문 능력의 평가와 수준별 학습의중요성을 환기하기 위해 작성되었다. 대학 글쓰기 교육과 관련하여 수준별 학습의 필요성이 지속적으로 강조되어 왔지만 그것이 도입된 사례는 찾아보기 어렵다. 이 논문은 카이스트의 사례를 바탕으로, 글쓰기능력 평가의 내용과 수준별 수업의 방식을 제시한다. 글쓰기 능력 평가와 수준별 수업은 학생들의 상황에 맞게 글쓰기 교육의 목표와 방식을설정하고, 학생들에게 글쓰기 학습에 대한 구체적이고 확실한 동기 부여를 해줄 수 있다.
글쓰기의 수준별 교육이 도입되고 유지되기 위해서는 그것의 학습적 효과가 전제되어야 한다. 이 논문은 수준별 학습의 효과를 검증하기위해 수업의 구체적인 내용과 특징을 개괄하고, 글쓰기 강좌의 수강생이 필수적으로 거치는 일대일 대면 상담의 방법과 실효성을 살핀다. 그과정에서 수강생을 대상으로 실시한 설문의 결과와 학기말 논술 능력평가 결과를 바탕으로 도출한 향상도를 분석했다. 글쓰기 능력 평가와수준별 교육 프로그램은 향후 대학 글쓰기 교육의 과제를 검토하고, 발전 방향을 모색하는 데 고려해야 할 사항을 시사한다.

영어초록

This paper examines the details and effects of the level tests executed at KAIST, and shows the impact of differentiated instruction on the writing abilities of students, in order to demonstrate the necessity of writing assessments and differentiated instructions on writing education at universities. All of the students of KAIST have to take a ‘writing level test’, after which they take lectures on writing according to the grade obtained. This paper summarizes the contents and grading methods of the ‘writing level test’, which was incorporated in order to objectively identify the writing abilities of students. This kind of evaluation system can help in establishing the purposes and methods of writing education according to each student’s current status, and make the students establish a definite and firm motive for writing education.
In addition, as an example of differentiated instruction, this paper summarizes the concrete contents and characteristics of the lectures titled ‘basics of writing’ and ‘logical writing’ respectively, which are executed at KAIST. This paper also emphasizes the method and effects of ‘one to one consultation’, which is an essential step of the above lectures. The effectiveness of graded learning is verified through surveys that were carried out during the process of ‘one to one consultation’ and the degree of improvement is seen from the results of the end of term writing test. The writing level test and education program of KAIST is based on the premise of a small group of students, the student’s desire for learning, the educational passion of the professor, and the contribution of the writing center. The process through which writing evaluation and differentiated instruction were carried out at KAIST provide several implications for inspecting problems and finding ways of developing writing education programs in universities.
