초록

이 글은 ‘미적 체험(aesthetic experience)'과 ‘자기번역(self- trans lation)’이라는 개념을 통해 전후세대의 시쓰기 과정과 그 의미를 재구성해보기 위해 쓴다. 일반적으로 ‘자기번역’이란 개념은 ‘작자가 자신의 저작물을 (다른 사람을 통해서가 아니라) 자기 스스로 번역하는 것’을 가리킨다. ‘번역’이든 ‘자기번역’이든, 원저작물(source text)과 번역된 저작물(translated text)이 존재한다. 그러나, 이 논문에서 방법론적 개념으로 동원하고 있는 ‘자기번역’의 과정에는 원저작물이 존재하지 않는다는 점에 특이성이 있다. 더 정확히 말하면, 그것은 존재하지 않지만 동시에 존재한다. 그 모순을 설명하고 해결하는 것이 이 논문의 또 다른 목적이다. 주지하다시피, 전후세대의 문인들은 대부분 1920년 ~1930년대 초반에 태어나 식민지시기에 제도교육을 받고 해방 후에 한글을 익혔다. 많은 전후세대 문인들이 문해자(文解者; literate person)로서의 경로와, 한글로 표현하기의 어려움에 대해 토로한 바 있다. 그 과정에서 우리가 도달하는 일반적인 추론은, 식민지시기의 교육․문화 환경으로 인해 일본어가 더 능숙했지만, 해방 이후 시간이 흐르면서 점차 한글 표현에 익숙해지게 되었다는 것이다. 그러나, 전후세대의 시쓰기 과정을 현상학적으로 추론해볼 때, 이러한 결론은 매우 소박하다는 것을 알 수 있다. 이 논문에서 주목하는 전후세대 시인은 김수영인데, 특히 그가 「시작노우트(1966)」라는 일련의 에세이에서 밝힌 고백과 주장은, 전후세대의 시쓰기 과정의 본질이 무엇인가를 근본적으로 다시 고민하도록 만든다. 김수영은, 자신을 포함한 전후세대의 시쓰기에서 ‘일본어’가 사라지지 않고 여전히 시쓰기의 과정에 ‘개입’한다는 사실을 고백했다. 그는 자신의 시가 ‘번역된 것’이라고 주장했다. 그리고, 그는 이 ‘자기번역으로서의 시쓰기’가 오히려 단일언어(혹은 모어)에 속박되는 것보다 더 바람직한 것이라고 주장했다. ‘자기번역’이라는 개념은, 전후세대 시쓰기 과정에서 은폐되거나 사라진 ‘일본어’의 존재와 그 성격을 재확인함으로써, 전후세대 시의 본질을 이해하는 데 중요한 통로와 수단이 되리라 생각한다.

영어초록

This article aims to reconstruct the process of the writing a poem in Korean postwar generation through the concept of 'self-translation'. Generally, 'self-translation' is a translation of a source text into a target text by the writer of the source text. Whether it is a translation or a self-translation, there is a source text and target text. But the unique point of 'self-translation' as the main concept in this article is that the source text does not exist in the process of writing a poem. If more precisely speak, it exists and does not exist at the same time. Obviously it is a kind of contradiction. To explain the circumstances around the contradiction is the another purpose of this article. As we know well, the postwar generation in Korea had distinctive environment of education and culture. Most of them were bilinguals. They were born and educated during the Japanese colonial period. A lot of them have complained the difficulties about writing and reading in 'Hangeul', the Korean alphabet. We could infer based on that fact like this; the postwar generation suffered from writing and reading in 'Hangeul' immediately after 'Independence', but they gradually became accustomed to expressing in 'Hangeul'. But this inference is too simple. I want to pay attention in this paper is Kim Suyoung(1921~1968), a famous poet. In particular, I would like to note his essay 'A note of writing poem '(1966), because it has made us to think again about the process of writing poem in postwar generation. He confessed that the Japanese language was still involved in writing poem have not disappear. He argued that his poems were translated from Japanese, and the writing poem as a 'self -translation' is much better than being bound to the single, monolingual, national 'mother tongue'. We can realize the existence of Japanese which has concealed in the process of writing poem through the concept of 'self-translation', therefore more obviously can understand the nature of postwar generation's poetry.
