자살충동을 겪는 남성 노숙인의 심리사회적 경험 연구 (A Study on the Psychosocial Experiences of the Male Homeless in the Suicidal Impulse)

초록

본 연구는 자살충동을 겪는 남성 노숙인들의 심리사회적 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구이다. 본 연구에서는 자살충동을 겪는 남성 노숙인 9명을 대상으로 이들의 심리사회적 경험을 심층적으로 탐색하였다. 심층면담을 통해 수집된 자료는 Colaizzi의 현상학적 연구방법으로 분석하였다. 그 결과, 자살충동을 겪는 남성 노숙인들의 심리사회적 경험은 성장기에 아버지의 폭력에 의해 감당하기 버거운 고통의 트라우마와 자신을 버리고 간 어머니에 대한 원망, 그리고 이러한 부모와 가족의 무관심으로 시작되었다. 이들은 오랜 외로움과 낮은 자존감으로 대인관계에서 의사소통이 어렵고, 자기 비하로 인한 수치심과 관계 단절로 인해 고립 상태가 되었다. 고립으로 인해 이들은 삶의 희망을 상실하고, 무력감과 노숙생활로 인한 우울감을 경험하였다. 참여자들은 수시로 반복되는 자살충동의 고통으로 죽게 되면 새로운 세상에서 행복할 것이라는 환상으로 인해 죽음조차 두려워하지 않는 왜곡된 사고를 갖게 됐다. 이들은 끝이 안 보이는 노숙 생활의 해결 방법으로 자살을 생각했고, 결국 현실 도피 수단으로 자살시도까지 하였다. 참여자들은 자살 실패 후에 살았다는 안도감보다는 현실로 다시 돌아왔다는 허탈함과 실망이 가득하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 참여자들이 생명을 유지하는 내적자원은 실 날 같은 삶의 의지와 언젠가는 노숙인의 삶을 벗어나고 싶다는 간절한 희망이었다. 이로써 본 연구의 의의는 노숙인의 성장과정 중 폭력 경험과 양육 경험의 결핍이 노숙의 삶과 자살충동으로 이어지는 심리적 과정을 제시하고, 사회적 지지와 신앙, 그리고 상담은 이들에게 마음의 안정과 삶의 희망을 주는 역할을 한다는 것을 밝혀낸 것이다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 논의와 후속연구에 대한 제언을 제시하였다.

영어초록

This study is a phenomenological study on the psychosocial experiences of male homeless people who suffer suicide impulses. In this study, nine male homeless people who have suicidal thoughts were explored in depth for their psychosocial experiences. The data collected through in-depth interviews were analyzed by Colaizzi's phenomenological research method. As a result, the psychosocial experience of male homeless people suffering from suicidal thoughts began with the trauma of the pain that was overwhelmed by the violence of their father during the growing period, the resentment of the mother who abandoned themselves, and the indifference of those parents and families. They became isolated due to their long loneliness and low self-esteem which made them difficult to communicate in interpersonal relationships, and shame and disconnection due to caused by self-deprecation. Because of isolation, they lost hope of life and experienced depression due to helplessness and homelessness. Participants had a distorted mind that was not afraid of death, because of the illusion that they would be happy in a new world if they die due to the pain of repeated suicide impulses. They thought of suicide as a solution to the endless homeless life, and eventually attempted suicide as a means of escape from reality. Participants were full of disappointment and disappointment that they returned to reality rather than relief that they survived after suicide failure. Nevertheless, the inner resources that the participants maintain life were the willingness to live and the desperate hope that someday they would escape the life of the homeless. The study is meaningful that the psychological process leading to the homeless and suicidal impulse because of the experiences of violence in the growing period and the lack of parenting was suggested, and revealed that social support, faith, and counseling serve to give them stability of mind and hope of life. Based on the results, discussions and the suggestions for follow-up research were presented.
