고전서사에 나타난 외모의 문제와 심미안의 회복 (Appearance Issues and Recovery of Aesthetic Sense in The Classic Novels)

초록

본 논문은 외모지상주의에 대한 인문학적 해결을 모색하기 위해 고전 서사 속의 외모에 대한 관점을 분석하여 그 대안을 제시한 것이다. 고전소설 속에 드러나는 미인의 형상은 매우 관념적이고 추상적으로 서술되어 있어서, 독자들이 상상하고 주관적인 이미지를 형상화할 수 있도록 묘사되어 있었다. 그리고 미인은 성품과 덕행이 함께 묘사됨으로써 단순히 외적인 아름다움이 미인의 조건이 되지 못함을 알 수 있었다. 반면 추녀의 형상은 매우 과장되고 흉악하게 묘사된 감이 있으며, 추녀 역시 그의 성품과 행실에 문제가 있는 것으로 그려져 미/추의 문제가 내면의 덕성과 연관되어 있었음을 알 수 있었다.
한편 외모의 문제를 긍정적으로 극복한 두 작품을 통해 우리는 외모를 바라보는 관점에 대한 두 가지 주제를 얻을 수 있었다. 「박씨전」의 박씨는 추모였던 박씨가 능력을 바탕으로 차별을 극복하며, 이시백의 심미안을 회복시키는 과정을 보여준다. 「노처녀가」의 주인공은 자신의 추모를 당당하게 여기며, 자존감을 잃지 않고 구애를 통해 행복한 삶을 성취하여 심미안의 회복과 확대를 보여주는 작품이라고 보았다.
이러한 고전서사의 외모 형상화는 전통시대의 심미안에 대한 두 가지 내용을 보여준다. 첫째는 외모가 외면만이 아니라 내면을 아울러 표상화한 것으로 보아, 다양한 심미안을 보여준다는 점이다. 둘째는 외모적 차별 요소를 극복하는 요소로 성품과 능력, 자존감을 중요하게 지목한다는 점이다. 이는 「박씨전」과 「노처녀가」를 통해서 드러나고 있다. 더욱이 「노처녀가」는 자신의 외모에 대해 또다른 심미안적 해석을 함으로써 획일화된 기준을 벗어난 아름다움을 찾는 사례를 보여주고 있다. 요컨대 고전서사의 외모에 대한 문제를 분석해본 결과, 우리는 외모지상주의를 극복하기 위해서는 편견을 넘어서 ‘전체’를 바라보는 감성적 지각과 인식을 회복해야 하며, 이를 심미안으로 확립하는 일이 긴요함을 알 수 있었다.

영어초록

This paper suggests the alternative to seek the humanitarian solution on lookism analyzing the viewpoints of the appearance in the classic novels.
The appearances of the beautiful women in the classic novels were described as to be very ideological and abstract so that the readers could develop the subjective images with their own imaginations. In addition, we could understand that the external beauty only might not be the condition of the beauty by demonstrating their personality and virtuous behaviors.
On the contrary, the appearances of the ugly women were exaggerated and described to be wicked, and their personality and behaviors were presented to be problematic so that we could understand that the issues between the beauty and the ugly were related to the internal virtuous characteristics. Meanwhile, two topics could be found on the viewpoint to see the appearance by two novels that had overcome the problems of the appearance positively. Ms. Park in “The story of Ms. Park” who was an ugly woman had overcome the discrimination based on her talent to show the recovery process of Shi Back Lee's aesthetic sense. The main character of “Song for spinster” considered her ugly appearance to be fair without losing self-esteem and realized her happy life by courting, which was the work to show the recovery and expansion of the aesthetic sense.
The appearance making in these classic narratives implicates two things on the aesthetic sense in the classic era. First, the appearance signified not only external features but also internal aspects, which represented a variety of aesthetic sense. Second, personality, talent, and self-esteem were highlighted as the elements to overcome appearance discrimination. These were shown in both “The story of Ms. Park” and “Song for spinster”. Moreover, “Song for spinster” showed us the case that sought the beauty relieving from the unified standard by another aesthetic explanation on her appearance. In summary upon the analysis of appearance issues in the classic narratives, we should restore emotional recognition and perception to see the ‘whole’ exceeding prejudice so as to overcome lookism, and could understand it would be crucial to establish this as the aesthetic sense.
