신(神)을 향한 에로스 - 플로티누스의 철학적 신비주의 (Eros for God in Plotinus' Philosophical Mysticism)

초록

본 논문은 ‘신을 향한 에로스’라는 주제를 통해 플로티누스의 철학적 신비주의에 접근하고자 시도한다. 특히, 신과의 신비적 합일을 추구한 플로티누스 철학의 동력으로서의 에로스에 주목하고자 한다. 사실상, 신비적 합일과 마찬가지로 에로스적 사랑은 개념적으로 접근하기 어려운 주제이다. 무엇보다도 에로스와 합일의 대상인 신이 존재와 인식의 저 너머에 있는 초월적 원리이고, 그 결과 ‘말할 수 없는’ 대상이라는 점에 어려움이 있다. 플로티누스의 에로스관에 접근하기 위해서 그가 어떤 식으로 에로스를 다루는지를 고려하는 것이 유익할 것이다. 그는 우리에게 다소 익숙한 사랑의 체험에 직접 호소하기도 하지만, 자주 사랑에 관한 플라톤의 글들을 인용하고 토론한다. 따라서 그가 어떻게 플라톤의 논의를 해석하고 전용하는지를 살펴보는 것이 중요하다. 본론에서 우선 플로티누스 철학에서 에로스의 궁극 대상이 무엇인지를 밝힐 것이다. 플로티누스적 에로스의 궁극 대상은 플라톤의『향연』에 제시된 것처럼 아름다움 자체가 아니라, 아름다움의 원인이자 원천인 좋음 자체로 드러날 것이다. 이어서 그러한 ‘좋음’에 이르는 방법을 다룰 것이다. 플로티누스는 플라톤처럼 감각적 아름다움을 사다리로 삼아 비감각적 아름다움으로 올라갈 것을 권하면서, 특히 영혼의 내적인 아름다움, 즉 덕을 돌볼 것을 촉구한다. 영혼은 자신의 아름다움을 이해하기 위해 그것의 신적인 원인을 찾아 상승하게 된다. 신과의 합일을 향한 에로스의 운동은 신을 내 것으로 만드는 전유과정이 아니라 내가 신에 귀속하기 위해 신을 닮아가는 동화과정으로 밝혀질 것이다. 우리는 그의 신비주의의 특징을 규명하기 위해 신비적 합일을 묘사하는 주요 표현들을 살펴볼 것이다. 마지막으로, 말할 수 없는 신에 대해 하는 말이 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있는지에 대한 짧은 반성과 함께 글을 마무리지을 것이다.

영어초록

In this paper, I attempt to explore Plotinus' philosophical mysticism in terms of his conception of eros, while focusing on his notion of eros as the motivational power of his ‘philosophy’ which pursues a mystical union with God, the ultimate object of eros. Eros in Plotinus has not been an object of much discussion in research. In fact, eros as well as mystical union do not easily lend themselves to a conceptual approach. Great difficulty arises from Plotinus' view that God is a transcendent principle which lies beyond being and knowledge and is consequently ineffable. The purpose of this paper is to sketch some main features of Plotinian eros in connection with the ascent of the soul to God. In order to get access to Plotinus' conception of eros, it is useful to see how he interprets and appropriates Plato's teachings. In the main part of this paper, we first deal with the question of what the ultimate object of eros is. It is shown that this ultimate object is not the beautiful itself as is presented in Plato's Symposium, but the good itself, which is identified as the cause and source of beauty. We then turn to the question of how to reach the Good. Plotinus follows the way taught in the mysteries of eros in the Symposium by suggesting the use of sensible beauty as a 'step' for ascending to the source of beauty. Plotinus emphasizes, however, the soul's care of her inner beauty, namely virtue, through which she ascends to intellectual beauty and, eventually, to the Good as a 'beauty above beauty'. The soul's erotic movement towards union with God implies, not an appropriation of God, but an assimilation to God. In the union with God, the soul finds her repose and, in her quiet ecstasy, the movement of eros comes to an end. We also draw attention to some of the central expressions used by Plotinus to describe the mystical union, in order to discern the characteristics of his mysticism. Finally, we attempt a short reflection on the question of what speaking of the ineffable God might mean, by elucidating the ineffability of God, in the light of God's indefinite and infinite nature and the insufficiency of language to express the indefinite and infinite love for God.
