<太原誌>의 표류와 정복에 나타난 타자인식 (A Study on the Recognition of Others in the Drifting and Conquest of )

초록

본고는 임성 일행이 제도(諸島)에서 요괴를 만나고 태원에 정착하는 과정이 비자발적인 표류라는 것에 주목하여 <태원지>의 표류와정복 과정에 나타난 타자인식을 분석한 것이다. 임성 일행의 요괴퇴치와 태원 정복은 처음부터 목적한 것이 아니라 외부적 요인으로발행한 불가피한 상황이다. 임성 일행은 제도(諸島)의 존재들을 요괴로 타자화하고, 표류 과정에서 발생하는 불안과 공포를 해소하기위해 이들을 희생시킨다. 이것은 임성 일행이 자신들이 천명(天命) 을 받은 존재라는 자기 정체성을 정립하려는 시도이지만, 실상 자신들이 오랑캐에게 쫓기는 타자라는 공포심을 은폐하기 위한 전략인 것이다.
임성 일행이 표류를 끝내고 도달한 태원은 미지의 대륙이지만 외모, 언어, 문화 등에서 이질적 징표가 없고, 같은 방식의 세계관과질서가 작동하고 있는 또 다른 중원이다. 임성 일행은 중원에서오랑캐에 의해 세계 밖으로 떠밀린 타자이지만, 태원에서는 자신을 주체화하기 위해 기존의 선주민을 타자로 만들어야 한다. 임성은중원과 제도에서 새로운 국가를 건설할 수 없는 상황이기 때문에태원이라는 미지의 대륙이 상상적 대안으로 필요할 수밖에 없다.
그러나 태원은 중원과 다름없는 유교적 질서가 구현되는 곳이고, 태원 정복 과정은 기존 역사의 왕조 교체와 다를 바가 없다. 즉, 천명(天命)이 구현되는 미지의 공간을 상상했지만, 그 세계에 적합한 새로운 질서를 구축하는 방법을 알지 못해 과거의 가치관을 적용할 수밖에 없었고, 이로 인해 신세계(新世界)에 대한 방향을 잃고이전과 동일한 세계를 반복할 수밖에 없게 된 것이다.

영어초록

Paying attention to the finding that the process of Im Seong's party having an encounter with monsters in the group of islands and settling down in Taewon was an involuntary drifting, this study analyzed the recognition of others in the process of drifting and conquest in <Taewonji>. Im Seong's party subdued the monsters and conquered Taewon, but those acts were not originally intended but inevitable situations caused by external factors. The party made the beings on the group of islands others and sacrificed them in order to resolve the anxiety and fear created in the drifting process. It was an attempt for them to establish their identity as the selected ones to receive Providence, but the reality was that they adopted the strategy to hide their fear that they were the others being chased by barbarians.
Finally ending their drifting, they reached Taewon, an unknown continent that was another midland with no heterogeneous signs of appearance, language, and culture and with the same world views and orders as them. They were others being pushed out of the world by the barbarians in the old midland, but they had to turn the residing people into others in Taewon for the sake of their subjectification. Being in a situation where he was not able to found a new country in the old midland and the group of islands, Im Seong needed an unknown continent called Taewon as an imaginary alternative. However, Taewon was not much different from the old midland with the Confucian order in place. The process of conquering Taewon was the same as the change of dynasties in the old history. In other words, he imagined an unknown place where Providence would be implemented but had no idea of how to establish a new order proper for that world, thus having to apply the values from the past, losing directions, and repeating the same old world as before.
