박인환 시에서 ‘경사(傾斜)’의 의미 (A Study on the Meaning of "Declination" in the Poems of Park Inhwan)

초록

‘경사’는 물리적인 차원에서의 경사 의미 뿐만 아니라 정신적 측면에서의 쇠잔, 타락의 의미 그리고 일탈의 의미를 지니고 있다. ‘경사’의 의미항이 쇠잔, 일탈, 타락의 의미까지를 내포한다면 ‘수직’의 의미는 철학적인 의미에서 인간의 한계, 죽음 소멸, 영원성의 의미까지를 내포한다. 그리고 ‘수직’과 ‘수평’, ‘평형’이 자연의 궁극적 운동이치에 가까운 것이라면 ‘경사’는 자연 상태에서의 일탈, 평형의 깨어짐, 혼돈의 상태와 관계를 지닌다.
즉 ‘경사’ 이미지는 불안정하며 혼돈 상태에 있는 인간 내면의 표상이기도 하다. 우리나라 문학작품 속에서 사람들이 딛고 선 지축이 흔들리는 심리적 경사의 체험은 6.25 전쟁을 빼놓을 수 없다. 그리고 우리나라 전후 무렵에 서구 문화의 유입과 전쟁의 공포 속에서 이를 누구보다도 적극적이고 절실하게 체험했던 문학인 중의 한 명이 박인환이다. 그의 시에서는 ‘경사’와 밀접한 제재가 빈번하게 나타나며 그것은 제재의 차원을 넘어서서 그의 의식상의 경사, 혼란 그리고 나아가 시대의 문제까지 반영하고 있다.
박인환 시에서 ‘경사’는 초기시에서 주로 “붉은 지붕의 경사”, “미끄럼”, “미래에의 외접선” 등의 제재와 연관된다. 이 ‘경사’는 지상의 것이면서 주로 빛 이미지와 결부되어 서구 선진문화에 대한 동경과 향수를 반영한다. 그런데 이 ‘경사’는 ‘미끄럼’의 경우에서 단적으로 나타나듯이 한 끝이 선진문화에의 꿈에 닿아 있다면 다른 아래쪽 한 끝은 현실의 비참함에 닿아 있다. 그 둘 사이의 거리에서 비롯된, 꿈과 절망의 교차가 박인환 시에서 주요한 부분을 이룬다.
그리고 박인환 시에서 ‘경사’는 “일곱개의 층계”, “신문지의 경사”, “죽음의 비탈” 등의 형상으로 나타난다. 이 ‘경사’는 어둠 이미지와 결부되어 피폐한 전후 현실에 관한 확인 및 내적 방황을 보여준다. 또한 그의 ‘경사’는 “주검의 사면”, “쓰러진 술병”, “생사의 경계”, “달 속의 암담한 검은 강” 등의 형상으로 나타나기도 한다. 이 ‘경사’ 모티브들은 박인환의 의식상 혼란을 드러내는 ‘경사면’을 지탱하던 ‘중심축’마저 와해되는 형국을 보여준다. 그리고 박인환의 ‘경사’는 궁극적으로 전쟁과 전후 피폐한 현실이라는 민족의 비극적 운명과 등가임을 보여준다.
무엇보다도 박인환의 ‘경사’는 단순한 도피의식이나 비겁한 죽음충동과는 차원이 다르다. 왜냐하면 그의 시는 비극적 주인공의 운명적 최후와 같이 어쩔 수 없는 상황 파국과 딜레마에 처한 극한적 고뇌를 절실히 보여주기 때문이다. 그리고 이러한 시인의 의식을 단적으로 드러내는 주요한 시각적 구체물로서 다양한 ‘경사’ 이미지가 나타난다.

영어초록

'Declination' has the meaning of not only a slope but also a failing, a depravity, and a departure in emotional aspect. In the point of view the meaning of 'declination' includes a failing, a depravity and a departure, the meaning of ' perpendicularity' includes a limitations of human faculty, an extinction and an eternity in philosophical aspect. When we think that 'perpendicularity', 'horizontality', and 'equilibrium' are connected with physical law in nature, 'Declination' is connected with a departure, a breakdown of equilibrium and a chaos from natural condition. That is to say, the image of 'declination' is a symbol of human inside that is instable and in chaos.
When viewing psychological experience of 'declination' in Korean literary works We can't exclude the experience of Korean war. And 'Park in whan' is a literary man who severely experienced that 'declination' in the fear of war, before and after the Korean war and inflow of the Western civilization. His verse has much theme that is closely connected with 'declination'. And this means not only the theme but also the declination, chaos, and moreover problem of era in his consciousness The image of 'declination' in his early poetry is mainly connected with the themes which are "declination of red roof", "sliding" and , "circumscription line". This 'declination', mainly linked with the image of flower, reflect yearning and nostalgia for the Western civilization. However 'declination' has conflicting two point. One point is yearning for advanced civilization and the other is miserable real life. The intersection of dream and despair derived from the distance of those two point is an important thing in his poetry.
And the 'declination' is mentioned in his poetry as the shape of "seven steps", "declination of newspaper", "slope of death", etc. Those reflect his wandering, awareness of impoverishment resulted from war. The image of his 'declination' also written as "fallen liquor bottle", "border of life and death", "black river in the moon", etc. Seeing those motives of 'declination', we can find that 'central axis' keeping up 'slope' is broken down. And we can find that ultimately his 'declination' is equals to the tragic fate of the Korean people.
Above all, his 'declination' is completely different from the awareness of simple escaping and coward impulse to die. We can say this, because we can see extreme anguish, being placed in dilemma and catastrophe as the end of tragic protagonist, in his poetry. And there are several images of 'declination' as visual and concrete thing, which shows clearly poet's that consciousness.
